So much to talk about and as usual JonjoD makes sense but that guy Bulwark has lost the plot
Come on mate MM looked cooked to me 4 out…you were looking through rose coloured glasses hich impaired your sight.
Don’t kid yourself about MM he has only beaten VPU in a couple of races and he will have to do much more befor he desereves the title Champion.
Sure I like him………too much in fact….but as the Who said….."won’t get fooled again"
Your wrong fists, your so wrong…. I wont be backing masterminded at his likely prices, but think he can only beat himself.
It is hard to watch the melling and say thart Voy Por Ustedes wasn’t held until Master Minded’s landing off the second last.
MM beat VPU by 6 lengths in a QMCC trial and 18 lengths pulling clear on the big day, the best jumps horse I have ever seen in my short years. Pure class. Cant wait to see him again.
September 23, 2008 at 19:21 #182104Steady on Bulwark, Kauto Star was the "horse of a lifetime" a few days go! You’re not Clive Smith son are you?
Presumably you are old enough to remember a true great of many a season, Moscow Flyer?
September 27, 2008 at 21:47 #182578I remember Moscow Flyer but think that MM looks better than him IMO. MMs performance in the QMCC was IMO an absolutely faultless performance (aside from a slight direction shift up the run in) from a top class horse at the top of his game. I have never seen a performance (over jumps) that I could put on a par with that. But this is of course my opinion, and these sort of best hosre ever conversations tend to go on forever, because everyone has their favorites and evryone judges them in different ways.
Anyone got any news one what the plan is this season for Fiveforthree? Thought he looked potentially topdrawer on bad ground last season and it will be interesting to see what he is contesting this year.
Also the other irish horses Cooldine, Venalmar and Chasing Cars?
September 28, 2008 at 01:47 #182607Trafford Lad, Venalmar ,Tranquil Sea the Irish have some very interesting novices and potential gold cup 2010 winner there.
September 28, 2008 at 13:02 #1826341st post here so be gentle.
What do you guys think of Star De Mohaison from the Nicholls yard and it’s chances of winning the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup?
I think it was originally aimed at the 2008 Gold Cup but had injury problems and got withdrawn at the last minute. It was a young progressive chaser before injury and I’ve had a nibble at 95.0 on Betfair. All the focus seems to be on Kauto, Denman and Neptune Collonges and this has become somewhat a forgotten horse.
Looking forward to the jumps season and it will be interesting to see if My Way De Solzen can find the spark of old.
September 28, 2008 at 14:17 #182644Welcome to TRF, Mowgli.
I would agree that it would be nice if MyWay found his way again, but I feel it is a possibility rather than a probability

I read some comments from Alan King (I think it was in Racing Post) that suggested there was that old sparkle back again. I’d like to see it run first and decide but could go for the World Hurdle again if that is the case.
September 28, 2008 at 15:52 #182653Glad to hear it, Mowgli.
He’s a magnificent-looking beast but he has run some very strange races, making me think he had a physical problems, but some comments I have heard suggest that the problems lie in the horse’s head. I do hope I’m wrong on both counts.

September 29, 2008 at 19:41 #182726Colin’s comments seem well founded. My Way De Solzen is a horse with undoubted ability. But with the blinkers being fitted for the last two runs last season, he seems to have confused his connections about getting the best out of him.He is a stuffy horse to get fit. First time out, last season in the Betfair at Haydock Alan King answered Clare Baldings question, as to how fit percentage wise My Way De Solzen was, with…"He’s in the late nineties." However, after the race commented…"He was blowing for 35 minutes after the race and was very tired. I’m disappointed with myself. I thought he’d done plenty of work at home, but clearly he hadn’t. He’ll go next for the King George – "
Out of all Alan King’s horses only two can compete with My Way De Solzen on the gallops. But I sincerely hope your right Mowgli that they have managed to sort out any problems and that we see the full potential of My Way De Solzen this season.
September 29, 2008 at 20:01 #182727Any news about Alfie Flits making his belated debut over hurdles. If so, perhaps we might see him appear in a novices hurdle as early as the Charlie Hall meeting at Wetherby and then if thrown in the deep end like he has been done on the flat. Maybe we might see him entered in big races such as the Fighting Fifth, Boylesports International and the Christmas Hurdle.
Looking through the declarations for this Friday at Hexham. Alfie Flits is declared for the 4:30 2m Novice Hurdle, with Brian Hughes to ride. He is also entered up in a 1m 4f listed race this Friday at Newmarket, though no jockey booking for that.
It will be very interesting to see which race they decide to go with, but either way it looks likely he’s going to be campaigned over hurdles this coming season.
September 30, 2008 at 06:59 #182826One horse I am looking forward to seeing this coming season is John Quinn’s Character Building. He was still a mere baby despite his years last season and John was initially keen to leave him another year before going to Aintree. As luck had it he had no choice due to a set back which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Anyone who has watched him run may have noticed he tended to wander around in a finish. Hopefully you can put that down to him not being fully developed and you will see a much more mature and stronger horse this coming season.
Third to Denman in the Hennessy last season all the questions could be answered if he returns to Newbury this year.
September 30, 2008 at 11:36 #182835Forpaddydeplasterer [have I spelt that right?]…
I think the paddy has only one d.. I think he will be a star this season..
First time poster on this forum so be kind.
Forpady belongs to a friend (well one leg) and he has already been schooling over fences with a view to a run in October Novice Chasing.
I thought Venalmar looked like a good thing in the Ballymore last year – in fact if he had the rail he could have won the race, should be a nice chaser too.
There were three horses who looked to have a lot of progression in them last season.Mad Max of Hendersons was the biggest horse I had seen for a while and looks like a nice prospect winning a couple of bumpers
Diamond Harry who is a horse bred to stay won the big value Newbury bumper over 2 miles last twice. Could be a nice prosect, but I am not sure about the trainer
Pasco of Nicholls was another huge horse and looks like hurdling is just a stepping stone. As you might guess I am a huge Alberta’s Run fan and think he was hugely under-rated by most people last year. I have concerns about JJON training of chasers, but to be fair he did not do a bad job with Exotic Dancer so I am holding on to that. AR us a really beautiful horse too.
I also beleive that Sizing Europe is value at 10-1 for the CH. He bled after his last run and I would need to see him out again, but they have resolved that he is a nice price.
Good site by the way – nice to see the interest in jumps!
.September 30, 2008 at 11:52 #182837Welcome to The Racing Forum, Alberta’s.
Nice first post.

September 30, 2008 at 19:41 #182877With Denman out of the Hennessey surely Star de Mohaison must be considered for this? I assume he would be running off the same mark as if he had have run in the year State of Play won, before Ogden pulled him out for whatever reason!
September 30, 2008 at 21:13 #182888I am a huge SDM fan, but was worried by the way he looked in January when he ran at Cheltenham, in the parade ring he was a bit lack lustre.
He has always been small, bue also looked out of condition and his coat was poor. I hope that they have given him and easy summer out in the field and he will be back to his old self this season.
I had backed him at a huge price for a place in last years gold cup, but was relieved that they did not run him.
Do you think Ogden will run him this year, last time if I remember rightly it was a weight/ground decision. so I can’t imagine an early decision, but he would surely be a good thing? Trouble will be getting a run into him beforehand I would guess??
September 30, 2008 at 23:14 #182900Sounds right Alberta’s Fun, about Star De Mohaison missing out in the 2006 Hennessy. Sir Robert and Barry Simpson decided that the best idea would be to give him more time, he was a 5 year old then, and not to give him a tough race on very testing ground that really wouldn’t suit him carrying a big weight, he was allotted 11st 11lbs. More over there was a race at Sandown, 6 days after the Hennessy, the class 2 Future Stars intermediate chase ,that he went on to win.He won the race off a mark of 153 and now has a chase mark of 158. They were going to make plans for the Gold Cup with races like the Letheby and Christopher and the Aon in mind, but as we know he picked up that injury and it was all academic.
Sir Robert has a motto…"If in doubt take them out." Which is what they did at Newbury, in the Hennessy and the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Which again was the best decision for the horse. The rushed preparation resulting in just that one run in the Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on January 1st, where he was in desperate need of the race. Also at the Festival the ground was against him in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Star De Mohaison is a very good-actioned horse and his running any where will depend on the ground suiting him. When Paul Nicholls was asked, about the key to getting him right, after he won the Mildmay Novices chase at Aintree, He said …"Patience and the ground." Those are the key words regarding Star De Mohaison’s campaign ahead, because his connections hold him in such high regard and they will bring him along accordingly.
