Lots of people been talking about the jockey’s title in the betting emporia I frequent. Its creating interest.
The BHA who – allegedly – have treated Newmarket with an iron fist over the transfer of three races to their beloved Ascot, may have been better off laying down guidelines to stewards about encouraging this interest. As it is, the Wolverhampton gin swiggers may have killed it stone dead.
Agree with Cav’s post regarding the current format. I think it works.

Hannigan, champion jockey elect, but yet has not ridden once at Newmarket all year, the "course of champions."
Not saying theres anything wrong with it but remarkable that Hannigan has not ridden at flat racing headquarters even once this season but yet will be crowned champion flat jockey…

Why would he bother coming all that way to ride in fifteen runner handicaps at HQ when he’s going for the title, when he can do the same now and again up north and in smaller fields? No brainer.
October 4, 2010 at 02:30 #320828Why not breaak it up into different classes eg
Rode most winners………….
Earned most money………….
Rode most group winners…….
Rode most classic winners…..
Rode most allweather winners..October 4, 2010 at 07:45 #320836The flat jockeys
turf
championship should be exactly that. That is the only change that needs making.

Well you pretty much summed it up, he stays up North and rides in smaller less competitive fields.
For me Hughes has a much harder task along with Moore etc and for me Hughes is the champion jockey this year.

On probably worse horses (that has already been said). Harder to ride a slow nag than a speedy thoroughbred.
Im sure that Richard will look forward to the trophy you present him.
October 5, 2010 at 18:09 #321052There is a jockey out here at Golden Gate Park(California) who has never even considered riding anywhere else and has ridden more winners than any other jockey in the world. So no reason Paul Hanagan could not stay where he is and continue to be Champion for many years to come.

Now the difficulty for your Golden Gates man is this: I wonder how many racing fans over here (or come to think of it over there) even know his name?
Becoming a top jockey as opposed to a journeyman – even a champion journeyman – consists of getting rides, and getting known, on the wider stage.
Personally (though I can’t speak for him, of course) I expect Paul Hanagan would swap 10 jockey championships gained around the gaffs, for just one Derby winner.
P.S. Let me make it clear that Pinza
does
know your man’s name!
October 5, 2010 at 23:46 #321106Armed with his new CV, would you not think Hanagan has a better chance of landing a plum ride in next years Derby than he had in this years? I think he’s gone the right way about it, no? What other path to the top did he have apart from thinking "Oooh, I think I’ll try and win the championship this year and see how it goes from there" ?.
October 6, 2010 at 00:34 #321110would be a remarkable achievement if hanagan prevails
the northern based jockeys are at a big disadvantage particularly as there is no floodlit aw track in the north of england
hughes can get lots of good rides at kempton and wolves, whilst hanagans rides are limited to just wolves
and anyway hanagan is by far the better rider imo
hughes has been guilty of many botch jobs with his exaggerated waiting tactics
paco boy at ascot?

But there is less strength in depth and competition in Northern racing.
Hughes has been guilty of leaving things too late or getting boxed in in the past but has has been riding brilliantly this season.
Well timed rides on the likes of Canford Cliffs, Zebedee and many others,
re Paco Boy. It’s now Goldikova 4 Paco Boy 0.
At Longchamp on Arc day, different going, same result.
Paco has the one sustained run. Goldikova can pull out more if required.October 6, 2010 at 21:46 #321246I hope Hanagan wins it. He comes across as very personable and intelligent and is an absolute grafter which is what the champion jockey should and is exemplified in AP McCoy.
I share the opinion already expressed earlier in this thread, that if it was certain other jockeys like a certain Mr Dettori or Ryan Moore we would not be having a discussion about how it is decided. The campion jockey has always been decided on the number of winners under both codes. Leave it alone, for goodness stop trying to change everything. Not all change is good change. This would be a diabolical one.
