I always thought he was a victim of Meade’s ambition. He ended up with a mark of 158 because he was campaigned in grade 1’s and occasionally managed to do something of note in small fields. If he were trained by one of the trainers who routinely send out non triers then he would have never been rated anywhere near as high and would probably have won some big handicaps off marks in the 130’s and low 140’s. Another horse that is a victim of this is ballycasey of Willie Mullins. There is no way that horse is a 160 horse but because he occasionally picked up the pieces in decent races he was slaughtered By the handicapper which essentially made him too high in the weights to win a handicap but not good enough to win a decent grade 1. It happens a lot with horses rated in the low 160’s or high 150’s
