Anyone ever done this? I’ve seen a couple of news stories and YouTube videos about people having a few days sun on the back for an awful lot less than it would cost for the same time in Cheltenham itself.
It’s something I’m giving thought to. The idea of a bit of warm weather, couple of reasonably priced beers and an atmosphere of people who enjoy their racing but don’t like being ripped off.
The stumbling block is that Ms Cider is currently in foal and wouldn’t be able to partake in the festivities + having to deal with me when I’m drunk and complaining about how I shouldn’t have allowed the coral cup winner to go unbacked at 25/1!
Anyone done it? Thought about it? Know anyone who has?
February 22, 2024 at 22:11 #1682169I’ve NOT been either in Tenerife or at the Cheltenham Festival every year of my life – if that helps at all?
I always watch chez moi, feet up, crashed out on either the sofa or the lazy boy, muted iphone xr swivelled to landscape view at point blank range.
By neither being at the Land Of The Peaky Blinders Wannabe in their “Winter Garb,” nor on an island just off the coast of West Africa, I consequently am four figures up on the week before they jump off for the Supreme.

The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.
February 22, 2024 at 23:08 #1682181Oops, wrong thread. That’s what happens when you’re nodding off
February 22, 2024 at 23:50 #1682192Been to Gran Canaria and last year to Lanzarote both beautiful places, but don’t have racing on my mind when going there.
Also when at work I watch, during my break, certain races on my Google Phone. Not rich enough for an I phone.
A few years ago a ex work colleague got at the time a brand new I phone for a grand.
I also think Cheltenham Festival would be too busy for me, especially on Gold Cup day, too many potential pickpockets for me.

Just some then.
By neither being at the Land Of The Peaky Blinders Wannabe in their “Winter Garb,” nor on an island just off the coast of West Africa, I consequently am four figures up on the week before they jump off for the Supreme.
If you include the decimal point for pence.

Given your frugal approach to life, have you ever considered just blowing your own brains out? It would certainly help save a few quid in the long run! Which seems to be your overall aim in life.
Meanwhile, in an alternate universe. Looking on jet2. A 5 night full board stay in a perfectly reasonable hotel with a sea view and lovely weather can be had for around £500 including flights from east mids.
Few beers, not having to work for a few days and getting some sun on my back sure sounds like being preferable to being stretched out on a sofa watching it piss down with rain and struggling to see what the hell is going off on a muted iPhone. But what do I know!
February 23, 2024 at 01:19 #1682200Don’t want to be a killjoy myself TC…
But Gambling and drinking alcohol – especially if it’s a lot of alcohol – does not mix – For anyone!
It’s just a bad idea. I’ve seen it happen to so many.Alcohol makes you too confident in the first place, betting too much money…
Then if winning you’ll be putting too much on the next race…
And if losing you’ll be chasing losses…
And a bad day will seem even worse…
And you’ll be going back to your pregnant girlfriend, drunk and skintDon’t do it to yourself or your girlfriend.
She does not deserve it!…I think that’s why Ian was a bit off with you and I don’t blame him.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 23, 2024 at 04:54 #1682203Ludlow Racecourse is open on Gold Cup Day. Champagne on arrival, three course dinner, all the races shown on a big screen and bookmaker facilities provided. £45 per person.
If it’s a sunny day, it will be like being in the Canary Islands…
February 23, 2024 at 07:27 #1682207Not an idea I’ve ever heard of. Is it Tenerife specifically that people go to or just whatever sunny spot they can find a good deal at? Do you have a link to the stories or YouTube videos please?
I can’t imagine it would be for me as when I go away it’s specifically to get away from everything and everyone I know but each to their own. I’d probably just go to the pub here and watch it if that’s what I wanted to do.
February 23, 2024 at 09:15 #1682211“… the lazy boy”
How terribly nouveau riche.
February 23, 2024 at 10:06 #1682216What a veritable wealth of material to respond to upon my return to TC’s excellent thread!
To RTB – Err, why would I lie? If thou art a Doubting Thomas, that’s not my problem.
To Neil – no decimal point needed, going abroad/to Cheltenham ain’t cheap, so by staying at home you’re effectively four figures up on the week before the Supreme!
To TC – I take savage joy in attacking the bottom line in life, keeping those costs down! But while saving pennies here on the hard shoulder, I nevertheless enjoy hearing about you spending those pounds in the fast lane!
To GT – I was actually just being my usual inanely-flippant self tbh, and I have a lot of banter with TC. I get what you mean but I wasn’t making any sort of serious moral/lifestyle judgement.
To Gladders – Touché! You got me there, though in my defence I acquired it when buying my fully-furnished home hence didn’t actually purchase it. It is comfy, though!

However I’ve been drunk enough times in life now to be able to curb my enthusiasm for gambling whether I’m up or down. I find drinking until the power of speech loses my being and unable to operate a phone/pen the best defence against spending too much I jest of course!
Richard, the YouTube videos I just searched Tenerife for Cheltenham and there was a couple of videos that came up. There are also trip advisor reviews.
It does all seem a bit bargain loving Brit’s in the sun but it still seems preferable to being at work or screaming the house down at home and the neighbours thinking a murder is taking place

Tbf this hasn’t happened since I had 130 win only Torquator Tasso to win the Arc that was more of a twice a lifetime Biblical event (German-bred in a Noah’s Ark-esque quagmire) than a horse race.
Each to their own – you’ve got your Tenerife plans, I’ve got me muted iphone XR, we’re both happy, it’s all good!

Breakfast and tea included etc
might need to get yourself a little job but could workBlackbeard to conquer the World
February 23, 2024 at 12:30 #1682235Nathan. There are apparently stories on social media (I don’t have any) of people doing just that. Urban myths or hard truths im not so sure. I could certainly imagine it being true.
Ian, if my mrs doesn’t fancy coming with me. If you agree to put some lippy and a bikini on for the 5 days do you want to take her place?
February 23, 2024 at 17:00 #1682251Its not a bad idea TC, but an enhancement would be to find a timezone where the first race would start at a local time of around 7pm.
Having tried to listen from the far east, its great starting after 9pm in the evening, but the rest of the week is a strain to go to work in the morning. As for ID in Lippy and Bikini..Im sure there will be a Meme soon enough in another thread..
