I am looking forward to this race to see how last year’s unbeaten 2yo Colt Reckless Abandon figures regarding this season’s top sprints. This discipline was very much a lucky dip for punters last season, with Bated Breath failing to make the grade and others such as Society Rock and Ortensia having their day at the top without carrying it forward.
It looks ripe for something with a touch of class to perhaps dominate and the largely ignored and forgotten Reckless Abandon must surely be a contender. It is a bonus that the stable has grasped the nettle and decided he is a sprinter, unlike Marco Botti with Moohaajim who waffled a load of rubbish about being confident he would get a mile and then didn’t take the hint after The Greenham, waiting until he was out with the washing in The 2000 Guineas, not staying a yard, before facing reality (Oi, Botti, you owe me pal!!)
Clive Cox is going well and had a smart looking 2yo filly win at York last week (Beldale Memory)
The current first five in the betting are:-
Sole Power
Reckless Abandon
Pearl Secret
Mince
MaarekOdds run from 7/2 up to 10/1 top to bottom as I write this and although Sole Power is steady enough he hasn’t struck me as being quite top of the grade and therefore vulnerable to something with some class. Pearl Secret didn’t excite me as much as he did some viewers last season and he’s not one for me personally. The next up Mince, drifted like an overboard Robert Maxwell before her comeback race and after showing decent early pace she blew up, reminiscent of what was once known in the trade as “training in public”. With stablemate Cityscape running like something was far wrong in The Lockinge it tempers enthusiasm for her so soon after flopping badly. That leaves Maarek who is an honourable horse but surely needs mud to trouble the best of them.
I am going to try Reckless Abandon, and while there are the usual caveats about sharp ones training on the next season, it could be argued that maturity might have settled some of his wayward antics from last year. Obviously Moohaajim has done little for the Middle Park form, his trainer must have been watching another horse when he formed the idea that Moo wasn’t a sprinter. The other horses from the Middle Park, Cristoforo Colombo and Gale Force Ten ran respectably enough in the English and French 2000 Guineas respectively to give the form a bit better look.
Maybe others fancy something at a bigger price but at 9/2 or better I’ll try Reckless Abandon now, because if he wins well we may not get decent odds on him for a while.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 20, 2013 at 19:42 #440207Obviously not in the entries for this, but does anyone know if Deacon Blues will run this season? Such a shame that he missed last year.

I caught the tail end of an interview with James Fanshawe but didn’t get the full details. He is entered in The July Cup and that is showing as his next race on ATR. Would be a big ask but he’s a horse I like and he’s been great for me on the betting front.

May 21, 2013 at 11:59 #440268Am with you with Reckless Abandon Steve, glad they’ve kept him to sprinting, good chance there’s more to come from him especially if CC can iron out his tendency to hang left. I think he could be a serious player this season.
I’m a big Sole Power fan but doesn’t look like he’s going to get his ground on Saturday so 9/2 on RA does look a tad tempting?!
May 21, 2013 at 14:17 #440281Mince has been declared an unlikely runner by Roger Charlton.
I heard a story that Roger Charlton got kicked off Celebrity Masterchef because he sent his Mince out seriously undercooked

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 22, 2013 at 13:23 #440386Maarek is also likely to miss this race now.

May 23, 2013 at 12:02 #440469Pearl Secret out as well! Happy with my 9/2 on RA.
May 23, 2013 at 13:43 #440472Reckless Abandon is generally 3/1 and 11/4 now. It is understandable that Sole Power is favourite as he has less to prove but he is skinny enough at 7/4 and has never won two in a row in his career. I don’t think beating Kingsgate Native was such a great feat, considering he is well exposed and hasn’t won for 3 years.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 25, 2013 at 06:16 #440651I am also siding with
Reckless Abandon
. It feels bad to pass over Sole Power given that he has done me some favours.
This is hardly an enlightening insight, but I am always attracted to sprinters who run up long winning streaks. Every little bump, bit of interference or moment of greenness is so costly in a sprint, so it suggests quite premium ability to me if a horse can win 4 or 5 in a row. I think that you can spot some gems coming through lower levels with this – as Hawkeyethenoo showed a couple of years ago.
May 25, 2013 at 08:20 #440663With the going now Good to Firm at Haydock, Sole Power has his ideal conditions, will cover my stake on RA with a saver.

I was a bit disappointed with Reckless Abandon, maybe it was the ground, as the trainer had slight concerns that he’d never run on anything so fast before. I’ll give him one more go if there is cut in the ground but otherwise he and I are parting company.
I thought Sole Power went off a silly price given that he’s never won two in a row before. A bit of a kick in the teeth for punters to see a horse beaten by the fav last time romp in for his first win in three years.
Looks like the sprinting division will be your usual "Eyes down for a full house pot luck bingo tombola jamboree" again this season.
"Two little losers, quack-quack"
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 25, 2013 at 15:30 #440716I was disappointed with Reckless Abandon too. I might give him another chance given that he seemed very keen and didn’t get much cover, but surely the international sprinters are going to eat this bunch alive.
May 25, 2013 at 15:45 #440719I thought he performed quite well to be honest. Did best of the far side group and was only just touched off at the end. Ground probably as quick as he’d like too. Plenty of promise for Royal Ascot IMO.

Trouble is, he’ll probably face a better field there. He’s been pushed out to as big as 10/1 for the Kings Stand now. He was also mucking around a lot beforehand, something I had hoped he might have matured out of. May I suggest whipping the "Toy Dolls" off him and he’ll be like Dayjur!!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
