The Post is reporting that the popular lightweight jockey of the 1970s and 1980s has passed away. As someone who remembers him well from when I was first getting into racing, it brought a tear to my eye.
My most sincere condolences to his family and friends.
January 12, 2022 at 17:37 #1577704Remember Taffy winning big handicaps under 7 stone 7 or 8 lbs. 33/1 + winners in Chester Cup on Old Hubert, Cambridgeshire on Sangamore etc. An excellent lightweight jockey.
RIP
Value Is EverythingJanuary 12, 2022 at 17:43 #1577706If he was starting out today he’d sadly never get a look in with the raising of minimum weight and the most valuable handicaps having a compressed look to them. Was there the day he won the Vernons on Absalom – was a G2 then and run in November, invariably on soft ground. I got Greville Starkey to sign my racecard as he went out to partner Vaigly Great who finished third.
January 12, 2022 at 18:10 #1577713His Cambridgeshire winner Sagamore was returned at 35/1 which if not unique must be very rare
Presumably the boards were neatly split 33/1 and 40/1…?

In that case, wouldn’t 36.5/1 have been fairer?

I was a bit young but I do remember his name. I am sorry to hear he has left us.
As has been said, it is a sign of a lost age. When I first started watching racing, the minimum weight was 7st 7lbs. And the big stables all had a go to lightweight jockey if they managed to get one into the foot of the weights in a handicap.
January 12, 2022 at 19:08 #1577733M L Thomas – RIP.
It was a 7st minimum (hence 7lb claimers having to do 6st7lb) when I first went racing in 1977 and of course even lower further back in the day.
