I heard journalists talking at Ascot on the weekend about this year’s renewal being about as poor as the KG & QE on Saturday; I’d just like to remind them and any others who were thinking of thinking along those lines that last year’s renewal was won by Court Masterpiece – and that any race which sees the winner of the Queen Anne take on the winner of the St. James’ Palace on their next starts is worth travelling a long way to see particular if an Asiatic Boy is there to add spice to the mix.
July 30, 2007 at 17:17 #109726The 7 runners in the King George had won 11 Group 1s between them.
The 8 runners in the Sussex have won 3 between them.

Three of these were the
Grosser Volkswagen Preis von Baden
Gran Premio del Jockey Club Italiano
IVG – Preis von Europa
Group 3’s by any other name.Three more, the
Coronation Cup
Grand Prix de Paris
St Leger
were won by a horse running in the race as a a pacemaker. One, the
Prix du Cadran
is over 2m 4f.One, Laverock’s
Prix d’Ispahan
was described by the RP as "a bad renewal" despite the presence of an immature Manduro.Three, Dylan Thomas’s
Prix Ganay
Irish Champion Stakes
Irish Derby
were the only one’s worth mentioning.Proving that there are lies, damned lies, and Gareth Flynn’s statistics.[/b]
July 30, 2007 at 17:52 #109729I give facts, you give opinion. I know which one I’d rather base statistics on.
July 30, 2007 at 18:42 #109735The thing is gareth it doesnt matter what theyve won if there not good enough, either at the trip or in general, to be competitive. like everything except dylan thomas in the race on saturday turned out to be.
July 30, 2007 at 19:29 #109738Despite the form being let down by the likes of Folk and Jack Junior, I thought that Asiatic Boy looked something special in the UAE Derby…does anyone have an opinion on whether this horse will handle the grass ?
July 30, 2007 at 19:32 #109739Take Dylan Thomas out of the King George and it’s still a better quality race than the Sussex, IMO.
Now the Nassau on the other hand, there’s a race and a half.

Its about the same if you take Dylan Thomas out, its not a strong group one in as much as the horses in the race are low rated group one horses.
July 30, 2007 at 19:56 #109743Excellent Art, Ramonti (unlike some, I respect his Italian Group 1 win) and Asiatic Boy, sure. The rest? They’ve won a pair of Group 2s between them, and only Jeremy can boast an RPR in excess of 120.
July 30, 2007 at 21:15 #109749Asiatic Boy handles turf well, Black Sam. 2 runs, 1 win, 1 place in Italy.
Through horses like Rallying Cry and Traffic Guard, I’m not sure this one is a genuine G1 animal, however good it looked in Dubai.
July 30, 2007 at 22:01 #109755I reckon Asiatic Boy is Group 1 standard all right.

Never ran right-handed course…..next time out maybe!
July 30, 2007 at 23:37 #109764Awful race this year. Group 2 standard.
July 31, 2007 at 09:19 #109799Maxilon 5..are you sure the turf form is in Italy ?
July 31, 2007 at 09:29 #109802Well spotted on the error, BSB. Asiatic Boy learned his trade, of course, in Argentina. At Palermo and San Isidoro, (which can be regularly watched on Channel 433). Sorry about that!
July 31, 2007 at 12:20 #109825I think this may prove to be a pretty good race.. I think you will find that Excellent Art is one of the two best 3yo milers and he should really be unbeaten coming into this. Asiatic Boy adds some spice and ramonti is no mug. Its better than last years renewal…
And why is everyone so bl**dy pessimistic about everything at the moment anyway!! Perhaps now the suns out everyone will be a bit more positive. For what its worth i’m quite looking forward to it.. And if my boss hadn’t decided to go on paternity leave i’d be there.. Which i’m gutted about!!!
July 31, 2007 at 12:23 #109826I agree that there’s a couple in there who have the ability put in a performance worthy of the race. Let’s hope they do.
