As much as I love both Dawn Approach and Toronado, I think Declaration of War could spoil the "duel". It’s never a two horse race, and judging by the manner he won over a mile at Ascot, I’d say he has a decent chance. He cantered all over them there, and Aljamaheer has won a group 2 and Elusive Kate has won 2 group 1’s since, so I wouldn’t say the form was bad.
It’s a question of how good the 3 year olds are (obviously they are) but at the prices, I wouldn’t say it’s a 2 horse race. DOW could be anything over a mile himself. Should be a cracking race.July 31, 2013 at 14:18 #447061Gloating time

Toronado – " My nap of the meeting "

July 31, 2013 at 14:45 #447062Toronado is out to 5/2 and there seems to be a lack of confidence behind him. Dawn Approach looked the tougher horse last time and performed with great credit having run so badly in the Derby not that long before. I think he’ll be better today and with the ground as it is I expect him to beat Toronado by further today. Declaration Of War has flopped before and had there been three places up for grabs I would have had a fun each-way on Gregorian at 25/1. I may have a go anyway and hope he can nick second behind Dawn Approach as others falter in his wake. These "duels" often end up with a surprise in the mix.
Complete after-timing but I stuck a few bob on Toronado purely because the price looked wrong based on there last meeting where he cost me big time. I think though it may have had more to do Hughes lack of confidence due to the ground this time. Two excellent milers I think.
Anyone got any opinion on why Hannon doesnt value or train winners over much further than a mile??? I would have thought this horse is could go to 10 furlong anyway.

Dawn Approach ran one of his typical races today, seemingly not travelling that great at one stage and then looking like he might draw away and win by a few lengths at the business end. It looked like Richard Hughes timed it perfectly today though and Toronado looked like he turned the tide, potentially for the rest of the season, in this race. This rivalry has certainly been the highlight of the season in the three year old division mostly noted for disappointing strength in depth. Where next for the sparring partners?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Couldn’t agree more and wasn’t that a vintage Hughes ride? He followed it up with an even better one in the next.
I can’t help thinking that DA was better suited by conditions today and will struggle to beat his great rival on better ground. Saying that he was magnificent in defeat as he was ridden closest to that frantic pace and hit his customary flat spot turning in. I have written him off at my peril before and won’t do so again as this horse has a lot of guts as well as class and there is clearly virtually nothing between them. However Toronado still looks on the upgrade to me and could be a very special horse especially when stepped up in trip next year.
Two superb colts who left the decent yardstick DOW for dead with a mile back to the rest and an incredibly quick time on the good to soft ground.
It sounds like they could both be heading for the Jaques Le Marois in 10 days when they will also be taking on Intello! Then it’s winner takes all in the QEII. Toronado is staying in training but no word on DA yet.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"

I haven’t seen the race yet, only listened to the radio commentary, but my initial thoughts were the complete opposite. The best performance we’ve seen from DA at any stage in his career is surely his imperious Guineas victory for which the ground was rattling fast.
July 31, 2013 at 18:20 #447078Just watched the race on Youtube. If they meet again over a mile I’ll be siding with Dawn Approach again. I thought Hughes was a tad clever and caught DA napping in front.
…we’re all entitled to our opinions.

Corals have match odds for the QE II and make Dawn Approach 5/6 with, wait for it now, drum roll to add excitement, rattatrattattat……..
Toronado at………………..5/6
Not sticking their neck out either way then.
Although Dawn Approach drew away in the 2000G his rival was clearly not right there with rank outsiders finishing ahead. Going back to Ascot and it looked like Toronado was going to win there at one stage, so he could just as well be the one 2-1 up now. Dawn Approach is respected but I noted that Richard Hughes said today that Toronado is now 30kgs heavier than he was when he ran in the Guineas. I wish I had known that fact earlier and it helps sway me toward him for the future.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 31, 2013 at 21:54 #447115Have only seen it once but can’t help thinking DA was in front soon enough and provided target practice for Toronado with plenty of race left to take his aim…….DA would have been interesting if his run to the lead had happened at a later stage that didn’t give his rival time to follow and pass him.
Wasn’t betting but Toronado would have been a stand out price compared with DA given that the impression was that arguably he could have beaten him without the interference last time.
July 31, 2013 at 22:11 #447124What a race!
Hughsie was always confident in the lead up and gave a peach of a ride.
This jockey is different mustard around Goodwood – 3 winners today. Brilliant

July 31, 2013 at 23:01 #447132I’ve had a few quid with racebets that Toronado and Dawn Approach fill the 1st 2 positions at 2/1. Better value than a reverse forecast. Watch DOW scoot up now…

Well done Nathan..you must have had the most fantastic day at Goodwood today, hope your little lad enjoyed it too (and you don’t have to eat your hat, you were so right
)Must hold my hands up, I was desperately disappointed that Dawn Approach got beat today, he went too soon and had nothing to give when Toronado made his challenge.
Toronado looked fantastic in himself today and Richard Hughes just rode the race to perfection. He’s a different horse to the one that turned out for the 2000 Guineas bigger, better and meaner a well deserved winner.
You certainly had those bookies on the run today Nathan
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 1, 2013 at 07:24 #447159Trip it was a glorious day even if a little cloudy. Nothing much went right for Dawn Approach the pacemaker missed the kick and like you say he went a little early but did so also in the Guineas don’t forget. I remember you telling me he looks like he’s asleep in the paddock and you were bang on.

It’s an understatement to say I’m delighted that Toronado has finally landed a big one those that kept the faith were rewarded 11/4 the sp
Not so much the horse but connections have took a lot of flak for talking the horse up and overhype but they are good judges in my eyes and I’m pleased for them. For the forth race we decided to stay by the winners closure and watch the race on the big screen as my son was knackered and I spotted Hannon Jr over by the pre parade ring doing an interview with Martin Kelly so we goes over and after he had finished asked him for a photo. Even although Toormore’s race was about to start he took the time to have a chat and made sure my son who was shy and hiding behind my wife was in the photo. My wife had only gone and not taken the photo properly you cant take her anywhere. ‘I pressed the button she said’

Toronado and Hughes on way back to the winners enclosure.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 2, 2013 at 15:47 #447362Seems like the shuffling about of this great horse finally caught up with Jim. To prepare a horse for the Derby after stating that he was not a mile and a half horse was ill advised. To come back so soon for the Jamese’s Palace stakes was taking a huge gamble. But he did. He got away with it. Unfortunately the horse got knocked about but still won. Considering the chopping and changing of his training regimen I am amazed he did not sour. That was the time to give him a break .But no. To expect him to race the way he did on Wednesday was just a mile too far. But he did. Ran an amazing race under those circumstances. Compare his program since the Guineas to his opponent’s and you would have him down the field if not trailing in last. What a horse!
