Not for the first time I’m concentrating on the McLoughlin pair. Digby ran a cracker at Uttoxeter, and is unchanged here, while earlier on the card, Mousey Brown had a good spin too. I’ve had an early go on Mousey, but both too big here, and if both go, I’ll split them

Thought Courtland was a fair price, but as much as he wouldn’t really be the obvious profile for this, I thought Horantzau D’Airy had some appeal and not entirely disgraced in The National. I could easily see me adding him as a smaller backup on the day

    Mousey Brown 16’s

    Riskintheground for me.

Plenty of good form against proper winter season jumpers last season and I’d ignore his latest run when Skelton may have just been having a roll of the dice to try and hoover up a few quid to repel Mullins on the last day of the season.

I’ll be doubling him up with Kihavah in the preceding summer hurdle.

Not too concerned with that Mousey Brown bet, as just an early go, but more concerned at not betting Horantzau as the week went on, especially with 25’s available. 14’s the best just now, but I’ve started chipping away him, and I hope he drifts

Also covered Mr Saxobeat, who I don’t think deserves to be as big a price

    Horantzau D’Airy 14’s
    Mr Saxobeat EW5Pls/40’s

Any chance that it might be cancelled due to the weather warning for the East Midlands?

I don’t think it’s supposed to be that bad around here Moe. The south east is due the real heavy downpours from what I’ve read.

There will be rain at the track; possibly enough to soften the ground but not enough to cancel the meeting.

Can only conclude that Cromwell is going for the trainers’ championship here then, this season…

The great advantage Irish trainers with handicap chasers is that they can race them in non-handicaps before taking on handicaps. This is a luxury generally denied to GB trainers by virtue of the program, beginners and non-handicap novice being in short supply this side of the Irish Sea.

At a higher level, the 3m G1 novice chase at Leopardstown at Christmas (the Fort Leney, sponsored by Neville Hotels up until recently) is getting binned to try to bolster the G1 Faugheen at Limerick. This might make matters worse in that regard. For example, in 2023 Grangeclare West won the Fort Leney and was next seen in the John Durkan off 159. If instead he had tiddled around behind Gaelic Warrior in that season’s Limerick race, he would have been a good few lb lower. Would still have been jacked for his 2nd in the Irish Gold Cup, but not as much probably and might well have bettered his 3rd in the Grand National.

The year before, 2nd season novice Gaillard du Mesnil won it and got left on 156. Had he cantered round behind Gerri Colombe at Limerick he might have dropped a pound or two and would have had to give less weight to Corach Rambler at Aintree.
