IMO however many runs, or however thin, fat or fit sublimity gets he will never beat katchit or osana in a race at cheltenham. he simply fails to see out the trip!
March 12, 2008 at 11:58 #150165And the fat pig still beat Harchibald and Sizing Europe home (though the former was given an abismal ride).
Was he given an abysmal ride?

March 12, 2008 at 13:07 #150202Sublimity looked well yesterday and was fit. No excuses, came to win the race on the turn for home and was beaten by two better horses on the day. I backed it EW and got a good run for my money.
March 12, 2008 at 13:25 #150211If the ground had been a bit drier he may even have won it.
I wasn’t a fan of Sublimity before yesterday’s run, last year’s campaign was a bit difficult to swallow.
Yesterday he looked the part, and you could see him running a big race if next year’s Champion was run on the more usual Festival going.
Colin (I hope that your not too irritated by my signature, Flash!)
March 12, 2008 at 14:13 #150231Would have to agree seabird, there was never any doubt in my mind that Sublimity was a serious champion hurdler, he looked fit and well yesterday but his jumping was poor (which I would put down to his poor prep) and had it been better he would have been better.
Another point to note about sublimity was that he had been reported as doing his prep work (the one that was in the papers) over 1m6f so they were clearly expecting a better test of stamina than yeterdays race turned out to be.
I disagree that sublimity doesnt stay a champion hurdle, as has been said, he won a far faster champion hurdle last year on worse ground, if anything its his speed in slower run races that is in question.
He has won a quickly run champion hurdle and finished fourth in a slow one now (after a questionable prep) jumping badly, so as a horse he is definitely a proper champion hurdler in my view.
If I had to pick one out of this years race for next years he would probably be it, two champ hurdles and two good runs although he is getting on a bit now. Sizing Europe looked impressive before yesterday but failed miserably, overall I think the Champion Hurdle division is going through a period of change at present. Yesterday wasnt just a 1-2-3 for the english, it was a 1-2-3 for the previous years novices. This years novices look to me to much stronger than lasts though, and next years champ hurdle will hopefully be a very good race.
I was hugely impressed with the supreme novice yesterday and I think Captain Cee Bee and binocular look like improving sorts and very good all rounders, there was an air of quality once again from binocular when he ranged up and kicked clear off the turn in, but captain cee bee wasnt that much slower when following him off the turn and outstayed him up the hill.
Crackaway Jack has been pretty impressive this season and still has improvement and so too does ashkazar from the fred winter alone and the triumph has some nice horses in it also.

March 12, 2008 at 18:14 #150319Fist, he win in a time of 3.55 last year. Katchit won today in 4.08. I don’t think it was anything to do with not staying. I think he wasn’t at his best after an interrupted preparation and it was only his flat speed that kept him in it in a slowly run race.
Stop taking about the horse being unfit it simply isn’t correct, John Carr said before the race he was happy with him, he was fit and well and he was confident the horse would win..every judge that was there saw the horse and nobody mentioned him not being ready by all accounts he looked great.
I’ll let you into a secret Tuffers……a horse like Sublimity who comes of the pace and hits you with a turn of foot is a hard nut to crack unless you do one of two things……..Take him on at a track where he won’t get the trip or set such a fast pace you take the sting out his tail and he runs out of gas. A slow run race was in Sublinities favour not against him.

I am sick of the subject despite the fact I more or less forcast how the race would be run and what would happen to Sublimity people are making all sorts of excuses for him……….3 times he has stopped going up the hill at Cheltenham now…….he was hacking going to the last and stopped exactly as I predicted because Katchit did exactly as I predicted,……Sizing Europe was about to do what I predicted but for going lame….would he have won?…..Not sure Katchit ran up that hill like a tiger but he would have fiished in the next county to Sublimity that’s for sure.
BTW the times were slow because of the wind which was 25mph out on the course at the time of the Champion hurdle. right into their faces as they passed the stands as it affected the uncovered leader more than most of the other horse who could cover up….. he’s ran a cracker.
We have a new crop of hurdlers far superior to anything since Istabraq.
David Pipe threw the race away IMO very stupid thing to do make the running in a strong wind must have cost him many lengths and the way he came back at Katchit proves he could have been ridden differently like he was in his early days( held up whe he won his first race)
With Katchit Sizing Europe and Osana now at the head of things throw in Binocular if he trains on and we could have the most facinating CH for a long time next year……….I would rather be thinking about that than a horse who got handed a bad champion hurdle on a plate, doesn’t stay and runs 2 races a year………..he will never figure in the CH picture gain and he’s best forgotten IMO
March 12, 2008 at 18:28 #150322He will not win a CH again. Fists points are good, but also, how often do we see CH’s run like last year? And with Osana and to an extent, Katchit around for a bit, unlikely to see a dawdle in near future anyway
March 12, 2008 at 18:52 #150325i think its a simple case of not staying the trip at cheltenham.
was evident in the bula, and evident today. to me at least.
Look at the first four home. IMHO they were all speed horses. The stayers didn’t get a look in. It was a slowly run race (slower than the Supreme Novices FFS) and track position and flat speed won the day.
Tuffers it’s not your day and I’m begining to wonder if racing is your sport Sublimity was a fair horse on the flat with Michael Stoute he won a class A 30k 1 mile Handicap at Doncaster. Speed is his beat weapon staying is not…………everything about him has non stayer written all over him.

Lucky I’ve got you to put me straight, eh Fist. I think I’ll take the views of people in the pre-parade ring rather than a guy on another continent as to Sublimity’s condition.Sublimity ran no sort of race. His hurdling was awful (when he is normally a fluent hurdler) and he pulled hard early on (because of freshness and the slow pace).
The fact that despite all these things he finished fourth shows you how poor a renewal it was this year.
Absolutely no offence to Katchit’s connections who should be rightly proud of their little horse but IMHO he would have been beaten in every one of the previous 18 Champion Hurdles.
March 12, 2008 at 20:03 #150351but IMHO he would have been beaten in every one of the previous 18 Champion Hurdles
On what basis?

On the basis that had he run in those races he wouldn’t have won

2002 was probably the worst Champion Hurdle recently, maybe if Valirimix hadn’t been injured, but the rest were a pretty poor bunch.
March 12, 2008 at 20:10 #150357So pure guesswork and a bit of prejudice then
I couldnt call that either way (although the ratings havent been too bad) and im not sure anyone else could quite frankly
Maybe if the field ended up in a bunch, then there could be some problem with the form, but that was not the case of course

I’m not sure why you think I’m guessing or prejudiced.
Perhaps you should explain why you feel it was a strong renewal
March 12, 2008 at 21:01 #150377I never said it was a strong renewal.
Why should i justify something i havent stated? I have no real opinion either way (other than they didnt finished bunched up)All a bit different from saying it was the worst renewal since 1990….

What was wrong with 1990? Seem to remember Kribensis being a pretty good hurdler – only beaten once before suffering an injury, and was never the same horse.
