    3rd race today at Wexford.

    Winner trained by Harley Dunne
2nd placed horse ridden by Harley Dunne.

Can anyone shed any light on why this was allowed?

2nd was favourite too. “Headed inside the final furlong”. Even if it’s not dodgy, as you say, no way it should have been allowed to happen

The thing I LOVE about this thread is it states “at” Wexford and not “in” Wexford.

“In” is, I think, an Irishism that has crept into UK racing in recent years, along with “the last time” instead of “last time out.”

Race meetings are not staged “in” the town centres of the places from which they derive their name.

I am not being anti-Irish, btw, modern English commentators referring to “laps” not “circuits” annoys me too – it’s a horse race, not an F1 Grand Prix!

    That is all!

“the last time” instead of “last time out.”

It’s actually “the last day” but the point still stands.

And I agree completely: it’s at a racecourse and the last time.

I believe the reason why we are adopting these “Irishisms” is quite simple: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!

I strongly suspect you may well be right!

If all English trainers start saying “the last day in Newbury” they might possibly saddle something that finishes in the first ten at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival!

People actually “in” Newbury – ie all the shoppers down the town centre – might be a bit alarmed at the notion of a race meeting being conducted in the local shopping centre, though!

It’s fine. If you want to pick at that then you could say Jamie Moore is only allowed to ride for Gary Moore and if Gary put Joshua Moore on and then Jamie Moore rode the Nicholls favourite and Jamie came 2nd with the Moore horse winning then it must be dodgy. No rules broken here. Not watched the race, if it appeared that the horse who came 2nd was trying not to win then it’s worthy of an investigation but no more or no less than any other jockey suspected of not trying.

Can anyone think of another example of where a trainer of a horse rode a horse other than his own in a race?

True, although Wexford is only a short walk from the town centre. Very nice track, although since they changed its direction it means the finishing post is nowhere near the stands. This does at least mean a fence is right in front of the stands and you get a great view of the jumping.

Are there any other tracks where the finishing post isn’t in front of the stands?

Thank you, Cork All Star – you make it sound as attractive a day at the races as it appears on TV.

    Well worth a visit.

“Are there any other tracks where the finishing post isn’t in front of the stands?”

Not that I can think of. In Wexford’s case it is purely down to the change to being a left handed track a few years ago.

It is a while since I have been there but Bangor on Dee has no stands and I seem to recall that the finish is not in front of the area where the crowd gathers. And at Chelmsford the early part of the race is behind the stand.

I have never been there but I believe Kilbeggan does not have stands either.

Not Wexford related but seeing that we were discussing annoying racing parlance in this thread, I’m going to add “going forward” as an irritating newcomer. What happened to “racing prominently” or similar? I’d be a tad concerned if my horse were going backward, needless to say.

My lad got going forward too soon in Wexford the last day, so he did.

“Hit the line hard” and “The race fell apart” both irritate me a little bit.
