Hi guys,
What does everyone think of the new Steve Coogan drama <b>"Sunlight?" </b>
Have many forumites watched the show? I would have thought so. The vast majority of my friends are non-punters and have no interest in horse racing, yet, for some reason, they’re all watching it avidly. And they all want my opinion…
Cheers,
Max
October 19, 2008 at 15:37 #185397missed the first episode, saw the second and will definately watch the last one..however, it doesn’t work for me…I think it tries to hard, if that makes sense..may see if I can catch the first episode on BBC i, because I assume that explains more about his gambling addiction [something which, although I’ve never had more than tiny bets that I can afford to lose, I can totally undrerstand how it can take over your life, and would never dare to have a Betfair account or anything similar because I wouldn’t trust mysel].
October 19, 2008 at 17:05 #185406…sorry Max I cannot help you with this one as I don’t know who Steve Coogan is…
I’m still trying to get my head around Geraldine McQueen.
October 20, 2008 at 03:28 #185491It’s Robbie Box reborn!

October 21, 2008 at 02:53 #185640Final episode is on tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to it.
Moe, my best pal loves the show and he was in tears – he’s a non punter by the way. Big gamblers don’t cry, obviously. Or watch the show even. Pah!
On the upside, Coogan is tops as usual. As is Bernard Hill as his stoic dad.
On the downside, as you allude to, Moe, it’s all very Lumiere Brothers – all you need to complete the overwhelming moral ambience is an accompanying piano, a kitchen in the slums, an earnest mum holding a cholera-afflicted baby to her tearful bosom, a half empty bottle of gin and a top hatted villain twiddling his handlebar moustache.
Will Bing be redeemed tomorrow night? His estranged missus is key to this. Her work colleague makes my flesh creep and I’d gladly give him a bunch of fives.
Mrs Mare, Steve Coogan is better known as his comic creations Alan Partridge or Paul Calf and, up till recently, the Mancunian could do little wrong. The redtops think he’s sold out to Hollywood. So that’s the beginning of the end of the love affair in true English style.
Oh and GC. Robbie Box is my absolute HERO!! His value betting approach predates Coton by five years.
This is the darkside of Big Deal though. "Trainer" was a lot funnier, if I recall.October 21, 2008 at 03:21 #185648I can’t seem to get the first episode to play on BBC i, but will definately watch tomorrow….it just seems to be a bit of a benefit for all of his pals who are no longer in sit coms of their own and I think it would have been better without them.
October 21, 2008 at 16:10 #185684I watched the 2nd episode last night (had it Sky +ed from last week). I enjoyed it and can understand to some extent how the gambling can get out of control.
It’s not quite hard-hitting drama but it’s grand for a Tuesday evening to kill an hour before bedtime.
One thing I wondered though – Coogan got 12/1 about Persian Punch winning the Sagaro Stakes in episode one – horse went off 8/1 so my question is
Did he get value?
Also Persian Punch came second in the Sagaro in May-02 and then Coogan gets a tip for King’s Ransom – now assuming that it was the GB-bred King’s Ransom, this horse made its debut in 2005 – are we to assume that over 3 years have passed or what?
October 21, 2008 at 21:59 #185745thank you Max, I’ve heard of Alan Partridge – I always thought that was his real name…anyway, this show seems to be called ‘Sunshine’..lol…
I think I’ll watch tonight as we’ve found our best friend, an occasional racegoer, has been watching too, and he thoroughly enjoys it.
presumably this is going to have a happy ending…it better, I’ve just had a flippin tooth out and I’m in no mood for sob stories.
October 22, 2008 at 01:10 #185777Robbie Box!! Brings back memories.
October 22, 2008 at 01:25 #185781OMG!! It’s called "Sunshine"!

Apologies all – this is why I hardly ever start threads and prefer to stick my oar in other peoples.
October 22, 2008 at 02:07 #185787I hadn’t noticed! anyways, we now know why it was called Sunshine; still think it was overly sentimental, but did find it very watchable..interesting to see what Steve Coogan will do next.
October 22, 2008 at 02:15 #185791Robbie Box!! Brings back memories.
That was a class show. Mr Benn as a hardcore gambling addict – you couldn’t make it up.
Did the necklace remain forever pawned, or did it all work out in the end?
Ah….happy days.
October 22, 2008 at 03:00 #185805Can’t remember the ending. His female friend (burd to you and I Grass) was alright though, if I recall.
October 22, 2008 at 03:31 #185813Didn’t Jan (the "burd") and her voluptuous daughter go alone to Australia in the final episode, chaps? Leaving the likeable, but hapless Robbie to his horses, dogs and cards?
I seem to remember the final episode being much bleaker than tonights episode of "Sunshine".
October 23, 2008 at 16:02 #186003A real tear jerker and I think aimed mainly at the female audience, as I expect a lot of women could identify with Bernadette, having a partner who, for whatever reason beit gambling, business interests, alcohol, makes them feel sidelined.
He’s also quite hot is Mr Coogan, bit of a sex symbol there showing up, not sure if any other ladies would agree with that or not…lol
I loved the flowery touch at the end. As a gardener I’ve done something like that before with crocus’s in a lawn, it’s fun to do – I thought it was brilliant actually.
October 23, 2008 at 16:08 #186004Courtney Love [allegedly] found our Steve quite tasty…..I disagree with firefox in that for me it was Coogan that made the series, although I do think that he gave up his addiction too easily; and the hospital bit was totally unrealistic…at least you got your happy ending UM because we all knew that Bernard was going to depart anyway.
October 23, 2008 at 17:09 #186015I’m a big fan of Early Doors-and Craig Cash. Most of the cast of Early Doors were in this, shame they didn’t use them to make a long overdue third series of ED instead of this over sentimental tosh.
