£88.83
Bangor 1.15
Walford Salad, 2* bet. £1EW at 6/1. I’m actually hoping he doesn’t win this to give me a better price for next time out.
Subtle Grey, 1* bet, 50p at 12/1. Donald McCain 90+ day break handicap chaser.I have laid Willoughby Hedge for a top 4 place at 3.0 to win £2.
Very happy to lose with Walford Salad. Given the right conditions, he’ll be a 5* win bet NTO.
Lost £1.07 on the race.
£87.76
Cheltenham 1.30
Lay Southfield Theatre to win £2 at 9.0
In addition to laying Out Sam, as I mentioned above, that’s +£3.86.
£91.62.
Doncaster 1.40
Big Chief Benny, 1*, £1 win at 2/1
December 9, 2016 at 13:46 #1276176Doncaster 1.05
Jacob’s only ride of the day on the fav.
Apart from the other 3 rides he’s got on the card.
December 9, 2016 at 13:48 #1276177£91.62.
Doncaster 1.40
Big Chief Benny, 1*, £1 win at 2/1
2nd, so £90.62
Cheltenham 2.05
Lay Third Intention at 7.4 + Bertie Boru at 13.5, each to win £2.
December 9, 2016 at 14:00 #1276185Call me a mug, since I’ve laid two of his opponents, but Cantlow does look a bit of a bet. £1 at 6/4

+ Cantow £1 at 13/8 (BOG), so that’s +£5.48 for the race?
£96.10
Doncaster 2.15 Godsmejudge, 10/1 50p EW
December 9, 2016 at 14:33 #1276193£96.10
Doncaster 2.15 Godsmejudge, 10/1 50p EW
3rd of 7. £95.10.
Cheltenham 2.40, For Good Measure 50p EW. This is a Ben Aitken Philip Hobbs qualifier for this meeting. He’s also identified JP McManus runners as doing very well at this meeting, hence my back of Cantlow in the last race.

Nice, bit of profit + in-running lay of Valhalla, £2 at 2.0. £1.31 + £1.93. £3.24 profit = £98.34

Missed the boat on both. Laid Robben 6.6 + Straits of Messina 4.1, each to win £2

£102.20
December 9, 2016 at 15:06 #1276199Cheltenham 3.15
Allee Bleue, not even confident enough to give him 1*! 25p EW 12/1
December 9, 2016 at 15:13 #1276200Cheltenham 3.15
4 place lay Dresden at 3.6, to win £4. £10.79 liability.
December 9, 2016 at 15:22 #1276203Brilliant result. Dresden back in 8th or 9th, and I was correct to lower my stakes for my back.
£105.70
And we’ve got the nap coming up at Cheltenham in the next. Should be a good day.
December 9, 2016 at 15:36 #12762053.45 Cheltenham
Midnight Maestro, £1 win 9.2.
A number of horses have chances here, it’s a very hot race.
Ballyhill is a 3-mile chaser waiting to happen. Under a penalty he has no chance whatsoever. 4 place lay at 5.33, £13 liability to win £2.89.
December 9, 2016 at 15:41 #1276208I’ve probably gotten a bit too involved in this 3.45.
Gaitway 3.75 £1
Poetic Rhythm 11.0 50p EW
William Henry 9.0 50p EWTotal of £3 staked on the win, £1 staked on place backs + then my place lay. Too involved. Way too involved. Silly. Sumkindofking could win this + I could get no places, and presuming Ballyhill bet cops, I’m going to lose over £1 in the race where my nap ran.
December 9, 2016 at 16:11 #1276215F***! Ballyhill 4th. Many many disappointments. 2nd with William Henry so I’ll get £1.50 back from him. Horrible race for me.
£13 lost on the Ballyhill lay + £2.50 lost on my backs.
£105.70 down to £90.20. One step forward, two steps back.
Something to notice from my two significant losses today; both came in novice hurdles/chases. Am I placing too much trust in novices? Both were very hot races too. You can point to the prices of the lays; 6.2 and 5.33. BUT, I laid Robben, Out Sam, Southfield Theatre, Third Intention + Bertie Boru at 6.6 or higher and they all got beaten. And none of them came in novice races. So I’m 0/2 on novice race lays, and 6/6 on non-novice race lays. That’s striking.
I think my staking was good. I erred with caution with Lettheriverrundry and Allee Bleue, I scaled down to 25p EW and that was correct, saved 1% of my bank. I hit the crossbar with Godsmejudge, William Henry, Big Chief Benny + For Good Measure all finishing 1 place away from good (or better) gains.
Walford Salad – I actually marked down to lay this horse today. First time out for Venetia, given how hers have been running, I wanted to lay. Seeing him at 8.0 gave me more confidence, as realistically he was a 5.0 shot at most. But I’d have been kicking myself had he won today, because I was seeing him being a 5* bet NTO. I’m marking his bet down as anger insurance.
Time to look at tomorrow’s cards. I already know I make at least two horses 4* bets.
I might look at Newcastle/Dundalk, see if I can’t scrape a bit back tonight.
December 9, 2016 at 16:30 #1276223Newcastle 4.50 Balducci, 50p EW 8/1
Newcastle 5.50 laid Mr Potter at 4.7 to win £2
December 9, 2016 at 19:11 #1276244I also had 50p EW on Captain Joy in the 6.35 at Dundalk, who was unplaced, so -7p from these last 3 bets, so I’m looking at a finishing balance of £90.13. Take away the two lays in the novice events and I can add nearly £30 to that total.
Anyway, it’s cost me only £10 to potentially learn a very good lesson when it comes to laying, or even backing, novices.
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”
At first glance, not much I fancy tomorrow over the sticks.
