I don’t get this. The idea they walk in then stop at the tape, how is this feasible and in both races over the National fences it hasn’t happened. The Topham the starter is telling them to stop but they don’t and it was like whatever, just let them go.
The more I know the less I understand.
April 12, 2024 at 19:25 #1690038I agree. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out why he wanted them to stop.
April 12, 2024 at 20:45 #1690050Thanks for bringing this up as I was also watching and thinking why call it standing start when they aren’t technically standing like they used to, they are trotting in, walking whatever then stop and just go. Some some haven’t technically stopped or stood still

April 12, 2024 at 21:01 #1690058Change it to a walking start. The chances of getting 25+ horses to all stand after a slow walk is zero.

April 13, 2024 at 16:12 #1690273Standing start what a laugh the starter just let them go.

April 13, 2024 at 16:18 #1690277I didn’t mind that actually. They made a reasonable line and it can so quickly turn into a complete shambles if the starter wants to be pedantic.
April 13, 2024 at 16:31 #1690286I agree but they should call it a walking start.

April 13, 2024 at 16:35 #1690290Trouble with calling it a walking start is potentially the jockeys will push it into a trot

April 13, 2024 at 16:38 #1690292Maybe if they called it a backward walk start they would actually be standing

April 13, 2024 at 16:48 #1690296That might work
April 13, 2024 at 20:14 #1690370Some horses are worse when they’re walking, too excitable to walk and can stand easier. One such horse was today’s front runner Glengouley who was the culprit for a false start at Cheltenham last time out when walking in.
Value Is EverythingApril 13, 2024 at 20:43 #1690380Starting stalls would ensure a standing start! And also remove the numerous other messy starts seen at the big Jumps meetings.
April 13, 2024 at 22:15 #1690409Jumps horses are too big for starting stalls.
Value Is EverythingApril 13, 2024 at 22:23 #1690410Is that definitely the case GT? I am not familiar enough with the dimensions of the competitors under each discipline to know for sure.
However, the very large number of dual purpose horses seem to cope fine with stalls, and stalls are used for the Jumps in places like Japan.
April 13, 2024 at 22:33 #1690412It’ll give Mr Incredible somewhere to shelter whilst the others are tanking around.
The more I know the less I understand.
April 13, 2024 at 22:43 #1690415Backed Mr Incredible last year and today. Slipped saddle last year. Brought down this year (despite Racing Post maintaining he unseated). He was well behind at the start but I don’t think it made any difference. I thought it was as good a start as I have seen for a National
