Well aware its a very different race but nothing has come out of either derby and enhanced their reputation at all. I would have fanced quite afew past derby winners (and also rans) to have been a fair bit more involved than FF today. Not sure the ground was the problem either.
Maybe he just has two ways of running. like a few Montjeus, doesnt seem to be an easy type
September 14, 2008 at 00:38 #180829Looking back over the race from an AOB perspective there were so many hints along the way as to why AOB didnt have a strong hand for this Classic.
Frozen Fire was ‘to be aimed at the Arc’ when the horse originally got thrown to favouritism in the Leger. AOB didnt seem to want to send him to the Leger. Weeks later, after he was declared, AOB stated there were concerns whether FF would stay the trip. With this in mind I’m still trying to understand why FF went off favourite other than there wasnt much to challenge for favouritism.
Taking FF out of the equation, Alessandro Volta is ridiculously hit and miss that AV makes US Ranger look like a consistent performer (yes, he’s that hit-and-miss to me). On top of that, there never seemed to be a horse for AOB to fall back on if he took out Frozen Fire. Where was the normal class 2nd horse?
I still think Moonstone was AOB’s Leger horse and there must have been quite a setback for Moonstone not to run.
Where is Moonstone being aimed at now? Does anyone know?
Regarding the future of FF, I bet he ends up in Longchamp on October 5th alongside SOF with DoM being prepared for the Breeders Cup Classic instead
September 14, 2008 at 01:41 #180835Ground must have been good and good-to-firm?
I was expecting Conduit to sink in soft conditions but poor forecasting by me settled the score in his favour.
Don’t know what Bashkirov was doing as the complete reverse of setting the tempo, and how Hindu Kush held of Washington Irving. Clearly the latter was one-paced and that’s proven here to be not good enough.
September 14, 2008 at 03:35 #180841I thought Look Here got bumped around a bit at one stage, but don’t think it affected the result..probably happened to others as well but she was the only one I was watching.
Perhaps she blew up after her setback but I doubt she would have beaten Conduit who won really well.
She may win another good prize but It shouldn’t be forgotten that both she and Frozen Fire were unexpected winner last time out and those types often turn out to be a flash in the pan. I wouldn’t nake any excuses for Frozen Fire and wouldn’t back him to beat a cart horse as he looks like a one-hit-wonder if ever there was one.
September 14, 2008 at 12:26 #180881someone else has said that she nearly came down on the bend and did well to finish where she did…the incident I was referring to wasn’t on a bend and I havn’t recorded the race so can’t re watch it..it seems that she is going to be kept in training next year..I still think she’s an amazing little horse and her record speaks for itself…remember she came into this race with an interrupted preparation as well.
