As I sit here at 6.57 on new years day sipping my Orange juice I wonder if this is the drunkiest the world is for every given day each year , def the drunkiest the Uk is surely , I doubt given the noise and fireworks going off round here last night that there are to many sober people in my area , I’ll be heading for the bookies after 9 , I’m expecting Shaun of the dead stuff

January 1, 2024 at 08:23 #1675988I’m just finishing a Guinness that was started before 8am. Slept about an hour since yesterday morning and been driving most of the night so off to bed soon. Quietest I’ve ever seen the roads, it was bliss. Could stay awake but don’t want to screw my body clock any more before work tomorrow.
January 1, 2024 at 08:43 #167599215 hours sleep (I wish!). Now a 30 mile walk to make me feel tired again and fall asleep watching the recorded racing this evening. Hopefully it stays fine.
January 1, 2024 at 14:04 #1676020I heard the youth of today are more sober (non-drinkers) than they have been for many generations.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 1, 2024 at 14:18 #1676025Not surprised by the cost of drinks in a pub. Weatherspoons the exception and your local supermarket. Working for a supermarket I see plenty of young people (in their 20’s and 30’s) with tons of booze in their trolleys.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.January 1, 2024 at 14:29 #1676033Our local shop is open for 4 hours today …. I don’t think it’s for bread or butter …

Sounds like a restless night, how about reading the Tree on here.

£20 in a pub gets you 4 pints if you’re lucky these days. Spend half that in the supermarket and you’ll get a nice bottle of wine or some decent enough beers.
I could afford to go to the pub more than I do but they are rapidly losing their appeal to be honest. Too many of them are mediocre and charge a fortune for beer that they don’t even bother to keep properly and glorified microwave meals. Not like you even get much of an atmosphere half the time either because people are either put off going or simply don’t have the money so it’s half empty a lot of the time. Happy to spend my hard earned at a good pub but they are few and far between so end up drinking at home.
I’m more likely to be found in my favourite coffee shop these days and it’s thriving because they do a bloody good job. It’s a mostly (far from exclusively) younger clientele too. Despite what I said earlier, plenty of people, including younger ones, do have money to spend but it’s not going on any old rubbish. To paraphrase one G Tipster, it’s all about value

No RR.
Obviously some don’t drink as much alcohol because of the increased price.
However, I hear the reason why a lot of the yout’ don’t drink alcohol is nothing to do with price.
The alternative drink is often even more expensive anyway.
Apparently it is a “lifestyle choice”, they just don’t want to drink alcohol on principle.Although I do have an occasional pint of bitter / cider or glass of wine etc, never seen the attraction of being drunk. Never been drunk in my life and now – as a diabetic – it is so dangerous I never will.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 5, 2024 at 21:50 #1676346Attitudes are definitely changing to it. I turned 43 a few days ago and the appeal of doing what I did 20 years ago to me is now zero.
I don’t regret any of it for a minute but I know none of it was healthy.
There is much more availability of low or no alcohol places and coffee shops were where you went to get stoned in Holland 20 years ago.
I’m more of a quality over quantity man now so nights out or weekends away are planned events with good quality food and drink as opppsed to just going out all weekend and getting off my tits for 3 days spontaneously.
January 7, 2024 at 07:14 #1676502I’m 46 and I couldn’t tell you the last time I set foot in a bar …. I’ve not drank for over 10 years , maybe 15

January 7, 2024 at 22:53 #1676614I don’t drink, but I am a bit partial to the occasional cherry liqueur chocolate – ALDI did a nice box at Christmas, ditto M&S Food Hall, which is just as well as it was an epic fail from Waitrose on that front.
