It’s mainly about the horses for me, but I think there are some admirable people on jump racing at present.
The grace and modesty of Willie Mullins, Ruby Walsh and their owners, ditto Nicky Henderson after the Triumph Hurdle.
The brilliant daring ride Nico de Boinville gave Coneygree.
The shrewdness of the Bradstocks – no amateur dreamers they – who calculates this year’s Gold Cup might be weaker than next year’s and waited for the rain to come.
The grace in defeat and pragmatism of Paul Nicholls who conceded it now looks like Cheltenham just isn’t Silviniaco Conti’s type of track – he needs a flat park course.
He was equally pragmatic after the Champion Chase – “why wasn’t my horse favourite? He had the best two mile chase form this season.” And he was right.
