I don’t follow that argument. Breeding is "geared more and more to speed", and "the drop in pace mid-race will be a regular feature" of the Derby; how can it then be a "pure stayers’ race"? You’re suggesting that the race will be run to suit non-stayers.

So we are going to have lots of rubbish derby winners from now

Well, the last few winners won feck all between them.

Let’s see if this one is any different.

Proper G1 class horses can win slowly run races and SP might be one of them.

    Or he might not.

We’ll find out in the next 4 months.

However, my guess is that he’ll start at unreasonably short odds next time out, just liek North Light and Motivator.

    Possibly Nick…

I suppose a true stayer should just take the race by the horns but as we all know, not many runners like to do this. Unless pacemakers are included or tehres a natural front runner, then i can see most of the big guns with there increasingly speedily bred horses playing the waiting game more and more

Steve<br>But SP was probably not running over his ideal distance and he was secodn in the guineas to a superb miler. Different profile to many recent derby winners

I know it doesn’t prove anything but Dylan Thomas’s emphatic win in the Irish Derby and Dragon Dancer’s honourable 4th(after sweating up beforehand and pulling too hard) must be at the very least persuasive evidence that the Derby form was solid. Not conclusive because Epsom and The Curragh are totally different, but hard to knock.

Edit: sorry didn’t spot same discussion on adjacent thread.

Well certainly Mordins early view that the French have the best 3 yo middle distance colts  will have to be revised.
