Suffered a fatal fall at the last in a hurdle race in Australia. RIP
May 5, 2020 at 16:20 #1487911This is just too bad to be true. A 3.6 million yearling and a Royal Ascot winner dies in a maiden hurdle down under. There must be something like a bad joke behind all of this.
May he rest in peace, but such valuable horses with his background shouldn’t be dying in a maiden hurdle race.
May 5, 2020 at 22:21 #1487921Why does how much they once cost matter? It wasn’t as if he was getting fruitlessly flogged out the back of the field race after race hating every minute- the Racing Post article says that it was his second start and that he was leading at the final flight.
I don’t get the angst over blue blooded Flat colts that aren’t successful enough to be stud prospects being gelded and sent over hurdles, as long as they are schooled first. How is it any worse than becoming a handicapper running on the all weather week in week out? What should they be doing instead? NH racing might not be everyone’s cup of tea but they’re not exactly being worked to exhaustion in a brick kiln.
I admit that I am not familiar with Australian NH racing so if they are jumping overly poorly designed obstacles on concrete with a huge breakdown/fatality rate then yes that is awful. But I don’t know if that is the situation.
May 6, 2020 at 14:56 #1487940Sorry he’s perished. A useful rather than outstanding racehorse. The Wolferton he won makes interesting reading in retrospect. The 2nd, 5th and 6th have all died, one breaking down at Meydan, another at Lingfield all weather. Couple of flops down the field, the fancied Pacify and Not So Sleepy have fared pretty well over hurdles. You pays your money …
