That’ll be my time settings ROland – I’m on CET!

There are other, more clear-cut mispronounciations about which I’ve always got more annoyed, such as the universal rendering of Seebald as "see bald" rather than the "zay-baldt" that his German origins should demand (see also "zum see" instead of "tzum zay" ).
Jeremy
(graysonscolumn)
Those ones bug me too Jeremy! I studied German and it’s a language I love, so I always have to grit my teeth when those are mispronounced.
Another I notice is "Buzy Bakson" which commentators often mispronounce as "Buzby…." It comes from a Winnie the Pooh story
I suppose anyone can be forgiven for getting Inglis Drever wrong because there are obviously two legitimate ways of saying it.
Another one that seems to be getting the commentators knickers in a twist is "Halcon Genelardais" (Actually I’ve probably spelt that wrong, but you know what I mean!)
January 29, 2007 at 20:21 #37162although mr holt is annoying when he cant get ingls drevers name right surely there is nothing more annoying in the whole universe than a derek thompson commentary. "its gonna be close" thats funny derek the horse in front is five lengths clear with half a yard to run, please spare us.
January 29, 2007 at 20:30 #37163I always thought Caillin Alainn was pronounced Coleen Nolan ;)
I wouldn’t say it’s annoying, because it’s just confusion over the correct pronunciation rather than just plain ignorance (yes there is a difference!).
January 29, 2007 at 20:34 #37165Simon would get at least as many names right as I would (probably many more).
He is one of the better ones certainly.
I have to say, much as we berate poor old Thommo, his pronunciations aren’t usually too bad.
January 29, 2007 at 21:22 #37166Hmmm….try listening to Thommo attempting "El Andaluz"!!! Painful stuff!
BH, you’re so right about Halcon Genelardais too – now c’mon, it’s not that hard, is it?? McCririck was in all sorts of trouble trying to pronounce it – yet I’m sure he must have studied French at Eton?!
January 29, 2007 at 21:29 #37167That grey in the Champion Hurdle isn’t Dee-troit City, either. That one gets on my nerves.
It’s de-TROIT. That’s what the place is called.

Routinely mispronounced at Southwell at the weekend by one individual. He knows who he is.

As indeed is ‘Southwell’.
The one that gets me is that twenty-three-year-old hunter chaser Zxtrvumpiwrdlexzasz.
I’ve heard it pronounced in scores of different ways. Thommo just calls him ‘Zxtrvy’. Bloody ridiculous.
It makes me so angry.

What’s unusual about Zxtrvumpiwrdlexzasz is that a nineteen character name got past the authorities.

I’ve never heard of this one or am I being dense and missing some kind of joke here?

Ho-hum.

January 31, 2007 at 05:34 #37173Well you’re a help! I think I get it anyway. I’m just a doofus.

February 1, 2007 at 21:15 #37174Anyone clock Thommo calling home "Penny Lane" in the bumper at Towcester today? Erm, maybe he wants to go to Specsavers…..that’ll be "Fenny Lane" he meant I’m sure….
A fellow Germanist, yay! I’ve always said I liked you, BH. I’m from a German family and did my first degree in the Muttersprache, before discovering the joys of librarianship and racing analysis, in that order.
Another one I thought of this afternoon: it’s "Zing-shpeel", not "Sing-spe-ell", Mr Francome! Grrrr.
