Gutted to hear that Silver By Nature broke a hind leg on the gallops this morning.
Cracking horse who’d been in great form his last few outings, and had been looking forward to seeing him running a big race over Christmas, at Chepstow, or Leapordstown.
Was lucky enough to get a few snaps with him at the stables open day last year, and he had a great nature.
Real shame for the stable too, who’ve had their fare share of bad luck.
December 21, 2013 at 14:29 #462610Just heard this news. What bad luck the stable have had. They loved that horse so much [as did we all]. Time for a ‘cry into my cup of tea’ few minutes. RIP. You were so beautiful.
December 21, 2013 at 17:46 #462643Very sad news indeed for me since Silver By Nature’s career has pretty much coincided with with my time in Scotland. He ran in a bumper at the 2007 Perth festival where I noted him as ‘nice type’ and an ‘interesting prospect’. Interesting indeed! 7 wins from 28 races and over £174,000 in race earnings.
Scottish racing has had few chasers matching his ability in recent years and he will be sorely missed.

December 21, 2013 at 19:45 #462651We saw him at Bangor when he was novice chasing. Actually have the racecard next to my desk; the sad thing is the only other horse from that day that seems to still be racing is Flichity, and it was the first time I saw Isabel Tompsett riding Sweet World and I started to follow her career. It’s a cruel game sometimes.
December 21, 2013 at 20:22 #462657I was so very sad to read this news today. He was a very special horse, not only in the Russell yard but among all fans of Scottish racing too. I was lucky enough to go to Arlary to see him and write a feature article on his preparation for the National, where he was among the favourites and looking to be Scotland’s first winner since Rubstic. He was a very lovely, gentle horse, clearly the apple of his trainer’s eye and a friend to all who worked with him daily. It is to them and his connections that I send my condolences, he’ll leave a big hole but also lots of great memories.

December 22, 2013 at 10:24 #462686Yes,a great shame, beautiful horse, seen it run so many times.Brings back memories of last year, when I was at Ayr and
‘Do It For Dalkey’ collapsed and died after winning in easy fashion, feel really sorry for Lucinda Russell and all connections, but I must say the stable has had a terrible few years of bad luck.Hope things only get better for the stable.December 23, 2013 at 01:13 #462754Lucinda Russell has had such bad luck over the past few years this must have broken her heart, I’m so sorry and devastated that this beautiful horse has gone RIP sweet boy.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 23, 2013 at 20:05 #462795Terrible for Geoff Brown and his family too. To lose a homebred who’d done so much is a great shame. Gutted for them all.
