It’s going to have a massive impact under the current restrictions. But if people can sit at home and bet online that will go some way to helping keep both industries above water.

I usually play a small patent on my days off. And I would usually go to my local bookie to do so. But given what the official advice is just now I’ll play on my phone.

The current situation of continuing behind closed doors is far more preferable than the one you seem to be advocating.

It seems that racing will be going ahead behind closed doors, possibly with really big-drawing ‘event’ meetings being cancelled (as we’ve now heard with the GN). I think this is probably fairly safe – very few people congregating in wide-open spaces seems reasonable.

But if we’re running 4-5 meetings a day, that needs the resources of 8-10 ambulances which in times of guaranteed shortage could look pretty obnoxious.

I’d imagine the small courses will take a massive hit financially with no paying public

U-turn by this useless government which has been lagging behind events at all stages.

As for those of you who worry about what happens when lockdown is over – we simply don’t know yet. But you can’t just let 250,000 people die in a catastrophe which was the government’s previous strategy.

But you can’t just let 250,000 people die in a catastrophe

One would have thought not; however, this short-term catastrophe pales into insignificance compared to the long-term catastrophe we the public are prepared to inflict on each other every day

I’m sure the Italians and Chinese are itching to get back into their cars to resume the spreading of respiritory toxins

Just an attempt at a little more perspective, that’s all

The health damage inflicted on people by long-standing air pollution in cities is likely to increase the death rate from coronavirus infections, experts have said.
Dirty air is known to cause lung and heart damage and is responsible for at least 8m early deaths a year. This underlying health damage means respiratory infections, such as coronavirus, may well have a more serious impact on city dwellers and those exposed to toxic fumes, than on others.
However, strict confinement measures in China, where the coronavirus outbreak began, and in Italy, Europe’s most affected nation, have led to falls in air pollution as fewer vehicles are driven and industrial emissions fall.
A preliminary calculation by a US expert suggests that tens of thousands of premature deaths from air pollution may have been avoided by the cleaner air in China, far higher than the 3,208 coronavirus deaths.

Food for thought Drone. But people will dispute this especially those involved in the automobile industry.

I get what your saying. Diet is also that which kills most of us. But there is also the way we die that is the state of emergency. We can convince ourselves that even though we smoke or over eat, that we wont get cancer.

When these kind of events happen though, death and suffering is more acute and in our face. Our normal lives are disrupted by it simultaneously. That said, you can probably get use to anything. The war and the spanish flu made death became a part of life and we just kept going through the unpleasantness probably with less commentary than we have today.

Just noticed that link, Nathan, not what I was hoping to read.

I hope and trust that those affected all make a swift recovery

The Mirror article cannot really come as a surprise.

Whilst I have sympathy with those who caught the virus whilst working there, I have zero sympathy for “punters” who attended and caught the virus – it was bleeding obvious they were taking a risk by attending the meeting yet now they complain and say Cheltenham should have called it off – what’s happened to self-responsibility?

OK Cheltenham should have called it off but money talks, their failure to call the meeting off doesn’t take responsibility away from those who chose to attend.

No doubt those idiots who have been packing out the pubs, including yesterday evening, will blame everyone but themselves when they go down with the virus.

There was a guy on BBC news the other evening who was asked why he was still out in London when the recommendation was to stay at home. His response was along the lines of “I’ll go out where I want, when I want, nobody is going to tell me what to do.”

When asked about what happens if he infects someone, his response was along the lines of “that’s not my problem, if they don’t want to get infected they can stay indoors.”

That sums up the pervading sense of self-entitlement in many parts of society, no more evident than with the selfish, irrational stockpiling of goods from supermarkets.

All very well… However, this really only blew up when cheltenham was on. There was no government advisory telling people not to travel. We depend on our government to cut through the confusion and give us the best advice.

Good point SHL also worth remembering the Champions League took place on the Wednesday of Cheltenham festival where several thousand Atletico Madrid supporters were at Anfield as pointed out by Ruby Walsh.

Nathan, just have a look at the 1st leg between Atalanta Bergamo against CF Valencia played at San Siro (Milan). That was on the 19th of February. Then go through the timeline of the Italian and Spanish Corona cases and you will understand an awful lot. Also take a look at the two epicenters in Spain: Madrid and San Sebastian. Then have a look at the La Liga fixtures from February 22nd. You’ll find FC Valencia playing at San Sebastian, just three days after the 1st leg at San Siro.

If you have any questions, I will gladly try to answer them for you.

Yes I understand that Ruby, what I am getting at is football is seen as the big sport, for whatever reason they allowed the Spanish over yet all I read is criticism of Cheltenham and not of football
