tbh School closures may or may not be a good thing, those data stats would not necessarily show their worth.
Suspect they will come once we get to a certain stage. That Worldometers data isn’t surprising for two reasons: An island may be easier to keep numbers down – even in these global times. Ireland is lower than most mainland European countries too. More significant may be that we are not a kissy kissy greetings country like (in particular) Italy, Spain and France. Although handshakes are bad enough.
However, whether this will mean we can keep it in check better full stop, or just delay the surge a little. Remains to be seen.

Value Is EverythingMarch 16, 2020 at 10:02 #1486299I tend towards Hams view
There seems to be a lot of hair shirt “look at what Spain is doing!”.
If Denmark had a policy of lining up and shooting potential victims in the head to keep the infected numbers down you can guarantee there will be loads of “why aren’t we doing that?” “johnson johnson johnson”
Picture in the times of a jogger in Spain being stopped by the police for actually being outdoors. That is pure stupidity. Anyone who thinks thats the way forward is nuts
Also anxiety and sitting on a sofa binging on netflix and pizza is not exactly going to help immune systems.
And then when some cnt across the block blasts out ****** Pavarotii “for the community” tensions will explode through the roof
March 16, 2020 at 11:11 #1486301Yes ginger but what if they start mass burning the bodies? Surely thats not good for the ozone layer and that Greta thing will be moaning no end
I think they should recycle myself

Also if this was to take hold, after initial strains on finances the government could make significant savings on State pensions (much fewer pensioners to pay) and the Health Service (only the fit and healthy left).
March 16, 2020 at 14:30 #1486307So if the country became a Spain/Italy and went into lockdown where only travel to work and back and for essential shopping was allowed who would take notice of this? I like to do a long walk at weekends (20+ miles). Would I be justified in telling the authorities, if questioned, that I was going to work as I had nothing better to do, only to take a 20 mile detour there, staying 10 minutes and then walking the 4 miles home (as I normally do)?

March 16, 2020 at 14:42 #1486309Being outside is one of the healthiest things you can do. Draconian rules about staying at home are certainly more about controlling a population than a disease. Most of the local cafes here are open but with restricted seating etc. Pubs have been shut though now.
Bit strange to keep your schools open though. Little people are the worst spreaders of everything.

Indeed, and I wonder if the authorities have considered the health consequences of a lengthy period of enforced cooped-up inactivity. Modelling to estimate excess deaths caused by exposure to coronavirus should surely be run in tandem with those estimated to be caused by inactivity. Weight gain and cardiovascular problems caused by long-term couch-potatoing for example
Fresh air, exercise and natural light are key to good health (mental and physical) in all age groups but particularly as you get older.
I’ve been gardening today in welcome Spring sunshine and feel so much better for it, as I did following a five mile walk yesterday
Pavarotti, pizza and netflix…jeez gimme corona anyday
March 16, 2020 at 15:20 #1486312My thoughts entirely SHL. As long as you are in pretty secluded areas then it shouldn’t be a problem.
If pubs/cafes were to shut this would not really affect me personally although I do got to pubs at the weekend. Feel sorry for the owners/staff of these, although I did have a little chuckle when I heard Irish pubs had closed the day before Paddy’s Day.
I think they will eventually close schools here but how do you get childcare if you have to go to work yourself? Do you risk sending them to grandparents knowing you may put them at greater risk? It’s a tough one.
March 16, 2020 at 15:28 #1486313Just like I said to Mum yesterday after Hancock’s announcement. Physically you’ll be fine. You’ll just go a bit cuckoo.
March 16, 2020 at 17:51 #1486314The government has just announced that emergency cover for ‘mass gatherings’ will cease tomorrow. Presumably that means ambulances at race meetings will cease too; so again presumably that means racing will be cancelled
March 16, 2020 at 18:20 #1486315No I would imagine that is restricted to things like large outdoor festivals and major sporting events where a large number of the emergency services are on standby or in attendance.
If I remember correctly, there’s got to be two ambulances present at a meeting so given that there’s probably going to be a pruning of some fixtures (I don’t think we will have more than 2 meetings a day by this time next week) then the chances of racing being completely stopped in the near future seems unlikely imo.
March 16, 2020 at 18:37 #1486317Unfortunately I think it is only a matter of time before racing is suspended.
And as for the Grand National meeting, I do not see how it would be practical to stage it with just 500 people in attendance.
Maybe they might try to run the National itself as a one-off race like on the Monday in 1997 but even then I am doubtful it would be realistic with the 500 restriction. The 1997 race did take place in front of a crowd – including me!
March 16, 2020 at 18:51 #1486319I think it’s hugely unlikely that racing will be suspended. But if it is then it won’t be for a prolonged period. I’d imagine anyone posting on here is acutely aware of how intertwined racing and bookmaking are and how one industry relies so heavily on the other.
If racing was to be suspended for something like 3 months (for it to be effective you’d imagine it would be something like that) then pretty much every independent, and more than one major retailer would surely go to the wall.
I personally don’t think there will be much heavier restrictions put in place against sporting events than where we are now. Most have been suspended for now but none are so supportive of major industries in the way racing supports the bookies.
The harm done to lower league football clubs and probably some premier league ones as well will be enormous too however.

Does a closed doors meeting count as a ‘mass gathering’ if nobody is there? without a crowd, a race meeting becomes just another workplace. Although it is of course quite easy to argue that doctors and paramedics would be better utilised elsewhere.
March 16, 2020 at 19:25 #1486321I’d imagine anyone posting on here is acutely aware of how intertwined racing and bookmaking are and how one industry relies so heavily on the other.
Everyone is being urged to undertake ‘social distancing’ with visits to pubs, cafes, restaurants cited as examples; to which could (and should) be added bookmakers shops. If there is no sport on which to bet then this will of necessity restrict numbers of the public tempted into those infectious dives
Rather than racing relishing the opportunity to ‘showcase’ itself as the sole sporting/betting medium due to lack of the usual competition perhaps it should take a moral decision to suspend in order to assist in mitigating spread of the virus
