It’s looking a safe bet as Godolphin have reportedly purchased Fast Company and he’ll be going to Dubai.
That means they have all or part ownership of six of the first seven home in the Dewhurst – I wasn’t aware of their involvement with Ravens Pass prior to an interview with John Ferguson on RUK just before the race on Saturday, but he said they did own part of him as well.
Ferguson claimed we should be grateful to ‘this great sportsman’ that he was willing to let all these horses take each other on – just wonder if this sporting spirit will continue next year. Hard to imagine all six turning out for the same Group 1 when there are so many aternatives.

October 22, 2007 at 13:40 #120908I think this is linked into my post in the bloodstock section. Basically the Sheikh has had enough of Coolmore dominating and has now decided that money is no object (if it ever was!) and he is going to buy any horse which has any chance whatsoever of becoming a top stallion.
This is coupled with drastically cutting stallion fees for a lot of the Darley stallions for 2008, and trying to ensure that more and more Darley, rather than Coolmore is seen as the place to go for the breeding professional.
October 22, 2007 at 13:54 #120910Makes sense to me, let the horse run once or twice before buying it.
Its a lot better than watching 2 billionaires with over inflated ego’s wasting millions in bidding wars at yearling sales that have little to do with the true value of the horses concerned.
October 22, 2007 at 14:05 #120912It will be interesting to see how Coolmore will price the stallions after the Breeders Cup meeting. Darley have long under priced many of their stallions but the statement from Ferguson just emphasises this. I cannot imagine Coolmore will responds with huge cuts, not their style.Galileo and Montjeu are surely in for another hike. IMO it is this very reason why Darley have struggled…their top stallions are still accessible to small owners with poor quality mares.
October 22, 2007 at 14:43 #120916could just imagine the reaction if John Magnier done smething like this
October 22, 2007 at 14:47 #120917There’s a saying in football that often gets branded about;
I think it’s on the lines of, "buying the title, not winning it"

Surely better to run em all in early season races like the Guineas and the Derby. You then get a decent idea what you’ve got and then, you can campaign each horse appropriately
October 22, 2007 at 15:30 #120922This is why I can’t stand Godolphin. Where is the talent in buying up all the best two year olds just so they can give themselves a 90% chance of success. You will then have the media drooling over the re-emergence of Godolphin. Hardly surprising is it when they wait to see who the top two year olds are then go out and buy most of them.
No wonder jumps racing is getting more popular, much more of a sport.
I wish Godolphin would quit I really do I despise what they stand for.
October 22, 2007 at 15:45 #120924What is their motto again:
"In the race for excellence, there is no limit to our cheque-book"!

heh heh heh
October 22, 2007 at 22:16 #120971Presumably then Flash you despise Coolmore for their purchases of Choisir, Peint Celbre. Encosta del Largo and so on and so on?

October 22, 2007 at 22:44 #120972Im just not sure that concentrated ownership is good for the game whoever it is…
what is possibly needed is another couple of big players in the game
A russian maybe?

While Godolphin have their problems (like everyone else)…lines like this are laughable. If Godolphin and the Arabs pulled out of racing British racing would be dead on its feet.

Would it cease to exist?
Of course it wouldn’t so lets not start going down silly avenues like Godolphin are the saviours of horse racing because they aren’t. Racing would still exist thats all that matters.
October 23, 2007 at 15:40 #121067I would like to know exactly why it would be "dead on its feet"…
October 23, 2007 at 22:01 #121116Aidan is right IMHO.
If the major Arab owner/breeders moved their stallions overseas along with their horses then British racing would indeed be in a parlous state, because there aren’t enough GB owners with enough money to compete with overseas owners/breeders. And the quality of foals/yearlings/ 2y olds on offer at GB sales would decline significantly because of the reduction in decent stallions standing in GB.
As things currently stand, there seems to be no danger of this, with Godolphin, for example, putting a big investment into facilities at Newmarket. But I suppose the long term worry would be, what attitude would the next Maktoum generation have towards investment in GB? If they decide that they need to focus investment in Dubai from the Far East, USA and other parts of the world, then unles the funding problem that plagues GB racing is resolved, who could blame them for cutting back on their GB activities?

October 24, 2007 at 02:58 #121130As a genuine horseracing fan, i couldn’t imagine the sport without Godolphin, Ballydoyle or any operation that brings these great animals to the racecourse. There would be less racing on tv if it wasn’t for Godolphin as they bailed out channel four so that helps me out a bit!
Its sad to hear that so-called racing fans could be so opposed to healthy competition. *cough* Flash
Are you sure its not a bit deeper coz i cant believe the purchase of horses (using their own cash, not yours!) to be raced and appreciated on earth (they aint got a course on the moon yet) could infuriate you.
Or are you just fiercely patriotic with a tendency to forget yourself sometimes?
