For such an smart guy,its so hard to understand why sheikh mohammed hasnt ditched the goldolphin operation and gone back to basic’s so to speak. For someone who has had fantastic sucess in the past with numerous great horses he owned, why does he not ditch the operation get his old colours out again and send his horses to the best trainers just like the good old days. Now sure goldolphin have had some great wins with very good horses but even he has to admit that the last 4/5 yrs have been very dissapointing considering the wealth he has, they just cant seem to buy top class yearlings any more.Considering the success that coolmore consistanly have and even the aga khan and khalid abdulla, you would think that they would want to raise the bar. They have not had a 3yr group 1 winner since 2005,thats a bad thing for such a powerfull operation. Each yr they buy up horse, but none ever see to reach the heights that the operation hope for. Im not a fan of the goldolphin operation, but iv a lot of respect for shiekh mo who has done a hell of a lot for the racing industry in the uk and I think he most find it hard to accept his baby isnt working anymore.
July 10, 2008 at 02:05 #172597Sheikh Mohammed holds a great "love for equestrianism".
As a contributor to the thoroughbred racing industry, he generally leads the flock.
Running his Godolphin stable primarily to succeed in major Group 1s around the world, I believe is not his priority anymore.
I think Godolphin has become a marketing tool for Sheikh Mo’s city of Dubai and now to promote the development of Meydan.
Darley is the racing entity that he focuses upon to exercise his "love for equestrianism".
July 10, 2008 at 03:37 #172599Whatever it is it is not working. He is not the type to waste money. So what is it.He sponsored the Irish Derby, then won the English one! A real cock up.
July 10, 2008 at 08:08 #172610His old colours still appear regularly on the racetrack in Arabian Races where he regularly has winners in the UK and abroad. Not much comfort to the struggling Godawful horsesI know but at least he is having considerable success on the track somewhere!

Beg pardon? Are you suggesting that Sheikh Mo would be embarrassed by winning the Derby rather than the Irish version?
July 10, 2008 at 09:43 #172623Perhaps he needs a staff rather than concept change? As a promotional tool for Dubai its been a resounding success.
July 10, 2008 at 10:04 #172626Newyork has a good point , they are underachieving , it seems that carting all of the horses over to Dubai for our winter just is not working anymore
overall though its hard to find fault with Shiek Mo , he is just good gor the game , maybe Cav is right they need a rethink and a new set of personell to drive them forward , as they are being outclassed and out performed by Coolmore at the present time
Cheers

July 10, 2008 at 14:10 #172674of course not. however people love to compete in and win the races they sponsor, remember when they sponsored the irish champion stakes? They won it many times.that is what I was saying. Bolger had the irish derby laid out for New Approach then by mistake left him in the english one. that was the cock up.
July 10, 2008 at 16:56 #172710My thoughts are that a few years back when the famous claret and white colours were reaping huges success racing was right at the forefront of the Sheikh’s mind.
Could it be that the monstrous developments that have evolved in recent years have pushed racing down in the pecking order.
He obviously still cares very deeply about the sport but compared to the scale of the palm island and, more recently, world island developments it may no longer seem so important.
Just a thought.

recently we are lucky he has not put horse business on the top of his agenda. If he had where would we be?July 10, 2008 at 20:38 #172738In Hala Bek, he may have a horse to bring a bit of the glory back.

Hala Bek has a long way to go to be winning Group 1’s.

I haven’t been racing in France for a few years, but he used to have – and may still have – a lot of horses in his red & white colours over there.
(usually with Fabre, e.g. Doyen)

That’s why I said "may".
We’ll see.
July 12, 2008 at 18:26 #172982Hala bek – The horse who should have won Sir Percy’s Derby (And my pocket still burns from that one!)..
I really hope this horse has the opportunity to show his class… At this stage he may be a nice outside bet for the Arc given that cut is no problem..
When do the entries close for the Arc? Anyone know…
