Once more, the English handicapper seems to be very lenient.

Off topic, about a horse of Carroll’s recently bought privately out of a stable in Ireland called Luggers Hall…he’ll be "nicely" handicapped soon, I’m sure. Watch out for him!

    3/3 Gambles landed at Kempton.

best racing in the world eh?

Which other two Estonia, Lishane Bog? Both had to be high on any shortlist today! Shalambar is however can not be defended!!

Yes, the latter (Lishane) was a large morning punt.

I’m sorry but how can people be blaming the handicapper?!

He is surely only doing his job. What is he supposed to do? ASSUME they must be cheating and keep the horse to the same mark no matter how badly he runs?

I don’t exactly feel too much sympathy for the bookies

It’s not the bookies that it hurts, it’s punters who have backed other horses in such a race.

It would be more accurate to replace the word

    punters

    with

    mugs

    .

They would have to have been mugs to have backed anything else in that race! There was only going to be one winner wasn’t there?!

Exactly, and the camp was well divided between those he knew and those who didn’t. Those in the betting shop were purely guessing either right or wrong, like a coin flip where the result is pretty much known but not to most of the people calling heads or tails.

But surely when you see a gamble like that you either decide it’s genuine and pile on or that it might not be and leave the race well alone. Don’t back anything else!

What really gets me thinking is all the people that have to be involved in yesterday’s coup. The owner and trainer obviously but what about the 2 previous jockeys? Callen and Doyle have to have been under instruction to not try.

When having a bet late in a race, it is often financially best to back another horse against a gamble like this. You’re probably getting a better price than it should be.

Callan and Doyle don’t need to be "involved" at all Joni. If this was a case of deceit, by far Shalambar’s best form is when ridden prominently. All the trainer needs to say is "we’re going to hold the horse up today, so settle him in rear"… Horse settles in rear and doesn’t like it, failing to run anywhere near his best.

There is no way connections can be forced to race prominently, sometimes connections will have valid reasons to change tactics. eg If there looks to be too much pace in a race.

What difference does 5lbs make to a horse losing by around 20lbs anyway? This part of the handicap system has never been explained. Yes, somewhere in print, Phil Smith will be quoted saying "it makes them more competitive." They’re only more competitive if a sharp turnaround in form happens, and that applies in this scenario for any grade Shalambar was set to compete in.

It would be far better watching Carroll, Curley, Quinlan & Co without races being set-up for them.
