Re Yeats.
Waste of time running him in the Melbourne Cup in my opinion. He has no chance of winning.
Himself
It would be a mistake to judge him on last year’s abortive run.
He is stronger, faster, and has been trained differently this season. They were also caught out by the uneven pace in his previous run, and intend to ride him accordingly. Might be that they also put in their own pacemaker to ensure a proper test, which would have helped a lot last year..Having been to Australia to witness "the race that stops a nation", I am convinced that Yeats is not ideally suited by Flemington’s left-handed course or the way in which the race is run.
Given the way in which Fallon had to roust him along to get on terms with Scorpion in saturday’s Irish St. Leger – and bearing that in mind – the chances of Yeats finding that extra, necessary finishing burst to overcome the home contigent (always very difficult to beat on their home turf) is difficult to imagine.
That said, I am very much a fan of Yeats, but a potential Melbourne Cup winner? Not for me.

I agree that it wasn’t an impressive win on Saturday, but did it really need to be?
The race was run at a dawdle which wouldn’t have suited either Yeats or Scorpion, yet it was a pace dictated by Ballydoyle, which suggests it was what they wanted.
In beating Scorpion, Yeats beat a better horse this year than those that finished in front of him in 2 previous attempts in this contest and, despite being rousted along to make ground on the leader, he was allowed to come home under hands and heels once he got to Scorpion’s quarters, and not at all fortunate as has been suggested elsewhere.
Add to that the possibility that he could be got fitter, as he missed the Goodwood Cup, (Which would have been his on a plate), for a reason, and the extra 2 furlongs he’ll get at Flemington, and I would still see the race as his for the taking, moreso if Scorpion accompanys him in a similar role.September 18, 2007 at 08:41 #115436AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
In an indication that Racing Victoria’s message on equine influenza (EI) may not be getting through to those who matter, Magnier said the outbreak of the virus, which is reportedly costing him as much as $800,000 a day in lost income could influence his decision.
.Would that be the same Magnier that was reputed to have ‘fixed’ a Tiperrary maiden the other day to nett around 2 grand?

That’s him!! He’s making up lost ground – albeit a tad slowly
September 19, 2007 at 07:36 #115531Apparently Yeats has blown like a gale in Melbourne Cup betting
September 19, 2007 at 20:05 #115584I’ll be on Yeats, whatever else, for better or worse.

Well good luck to you! I hope he bolts in!
September 20, 2007 at 09:14 #115629Of all the northern hemisphere runners, Purple Moon would be my pick. I think he has an outstanding chance.

September 20, 2007 at 09:30 #115632Since Cumani rates his chance so highly, he must be done at current prices, mustn’t he?
September 23, 2007 at 13:54 #116113Topweight Yeats has been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup with Irish conglomerate Coolmore to rely on Scorpion and Mahler.
Tom Magnier, son of John Magnier, was at Caulfield (Vic) races on Saturday and said his father John and trainer Aidan O’Brien believed the two horses were the ones best suited to the 3200m Cup on November 6.
"Aidan is very eager to win the race and after discussing it we agreed that Scorpion and Mahler are the two horses best suited to come out," Magnier said.
Magnier said Mick Kinane was the likely rider for Scorpion with Australian Stephen Baster to ride Mahler.
"Stephen has already won a Group One for us so he is the pick," Magnier said.
Yeats is likely to run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in early October.Other confirmed international MC runners are Purple Moon and Tungsten Strike, who are due to arrive in Melbourne on October 2.
September 23, 2007 at 14:52 #116118I read about Yeats missing it, and daft though it probably is, I prefer Scorpion’s chance.
September 23, 2007 at 16:01 #116120The fact that Yeats is going for the Arc must surely mean he’ll be retired at the end of the year doesn’t it? Particularly with the likes of Septimus, and all those than ran in the Leger looking Cup horses in the making too.
September 24, 2007 at 13:57 #116205Sepimus is not going to run in the MC either, more than likely going for the Prix du Cadran.

I would doubt he is even entered for the Arc, he has certainly never featured in any betting for the race? He’s still not there.
Doctor Dino is though! (25/1) He was here for the SIAC in May – he’s a nice horseSeptember 24, 2007 at 14:43 #116213Seems like Coolmore are trying to cover all bases in an attempt to get Authorized beat and win the Arc.
Good/Good to firm ground – Any pace – DT would surely be there best chance
Any ground and run at a blazing pace would bring Yeats into it..
Turns up really soft then Soldier of Fortune’s chances must surely be improved..
