Going up on Friday for this race as it is a freebie on my Haydock Members Badge.
Mark Johnston has Tawzeea in and is an unexposed 3yo coming of the back of a Catterick win and could go well.
Ann Stokels pride and joy in Pawan runs and having won well at Warwick could run another good race.
All in all a fair handicap and a good prize, Cant wait for it.
July 17, 2008 at 13:07 #173533Knot in Wood strolled this last year doing a passable impression of Oasis Dream. C&D is ideal. Going should be ideal. Draw is fine, 4 compared with 7 last year.
I can see a repeat performance.
July 18, 2008 at 13:26 #173649A lot has been made of the fact that Knot In Wood won this last year, but he hasn’t looked quite the same force since for all he’s run well enough in some strong handicaps. Everything went right for Everymanforhimself at Beverley last time and I would want to be against him in this stronger race. I didn’t think there is a lot of pace in this and thought Valery Borzov could get the run of things from a low draw against the rail. He’s improved greatly this year since fitted with headgear and sent from the front and surely his rider won’t repeat the ludicrously forceful tactics he tried at Newcastle last time. If he sets a sensible pace on the rail, I think he could prove difficult to catch. The stiff finish won’t play to his strengths though so I’ll be looking to get out in-running very late in the day.

I tkought Knot In Wood ran a blinder in the Steward’s Cup considering the ground was a little on the fast side for him. Would expect him to go very close tonight unless there’s a deluge.
Pawan should also run another big race, with the same proviso about the weather, and his jockette doesn’t put up overweight.July 18, 2008 at 15:19 #173659I know what you mean Reet Hard. He also did really well from the wrong side at Newmarket earlier in the season, I just wonder if he’s a bit too content to chase these days rather than go and grab a race by the scruff of the neck. Haydock didn’t pan out ideally for him but I still thought he was a bit disappointing there. The doubts are enough for me at the price, though he is sure to track Valery going strongly for a long way.
July 18, 2008 at 15:20 #173660I think Knot In Wood is in similar form to last season, just think trip / track suit ideally and expect him to improve accordingly.

I guess the lesson is never to trust conditions-race form in handicaps, (Or, perhaps more pertinently, trainers who run their better handicappers in races at levels against horses they could be receiving weight from).
Trust you got out in time on VB?July 21, 2008 at 08:59 #173984After feling like following Faheys Knot in WOod and Wyatt Earp "off a cliff" i am in much better spirits after the weekend.
July 21, 2008 at 18:39 #174055A very good race and well done to Knot in Wood.
Wonder if he can do the double and get the Ayr Gold Cup.
July 22, 2008 at 13:01 #174169Not sure about that but Wyatt Earp out this weekend under a penalty will be of interest. Looked back to something like summer 06 / 07 last sunday and still nearly a stone below his highest winning mark.
