Hi,
What’s it like living in Scotland these days? Are you happy with Alex Salmond and the SNP? do you think Scotland will be a great place to live in the near future if it isn’t already?
Apart from being interested in your views generally, which I am, I’d like to know also for personal reasons as we may be relocating there – not immediately [Dave Jay you may sleep soundly in your bed <!– s:lol: –>
<!– s:lol: –> ]. There seems big plans afoot and lots of expenditure going on.We’ve been to Inverness and Ullapool and looked around, bit far north for me and just recently got back from Glasgow where we stayed, and enjoyed our time visiting Ayr, and the environs. Bit bracing is Ayr, but better than I expected. Even bumped into Linda Perratt in M and S [at Newton Mearns which I liked]. Funny, I always had her down as a Co-Op kind of girl….
anyway, quite serious about it, any advice appreciated, Glasgow/Edinburgh I imagine, realistically. <!– s:) –>
<!– s:) –>November 20, 2007 at 19:27 #125941I have to report that Mr Blair’s tenure in Downing Street, has shoved me further towards the Independence mandate than I ever thought possible.
I still have quite a ways to go before I hitch myself to that particular wagon, but I no longer have the vehement distaste for the idea, that I once had.
How you can possibly look past Edinburgh in your search, when it is the seat of the Kingdom of Stevedvg and all his evil minions, is beyond me, UM.
November 20, 2007 at 20:53 #125959lol…quite!…anyway thanks ‘hopper
This is why we’re taking an interest too as things seem to be moving along up there and I’m a little taken by the Scottish Parliament. Mr Salmond isn’t looking quite so displeasing to me these days, even though a little pompous and smug perhaps. They can’t be doing any worse than the shower we have down here at the moment, that’s for sure.
My husband supports a Glasgow football team, rather too ardently for my taste and as much as I would prefer Edinburgh, I may have to concede defeat ultimately.

UM, folding your hand on this one would be a howler of quite stupendous proportions, I have to say.
Weedgie is strictly for visting (once in a very blue moon, and even then, only to renew a passport, or perhaps to throw spare coppers at the peasants
) – it certainly ain’t for living in.I may be biased though.
November 20, 2007 at 21:25 #125964…bad news indeed. This requires a firm and steady hand at the helm…mine!

why are all the houses so grey and drab up there, rows and rows of greyness. Is it something to do with the weather that they all have to be this colour? it reminds me of the council house I was born in.
East Kilbride was delightful
November 20, 2007 at 21:29 #125967I love Glasgow and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, fantastic place, fantastic people, fantastic football teams, fantastic nightclubs, fantastic culture but I can’t be ársed with politics so no comments from me on that score.
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and ought to be the capital, I’m not biased I just deal with facts.

Actually, my evil minions are spread all over the UK … and a few even further afield.
Scotland is doing fine and will continue to do fine whether or not we go independent.
IMO, the key point is that there’s 6-7 times as much land per person in Scotland compared to England which means you guys are soon going to be fecked when it comes to space and we’ll be OK.
Plus, if we go solo, we’ll be a little nothing country at the arse end of Europe and we won’t have to spend all our money fighting the brown and yellow people for control of the Earth and its resources.

..just to say that I’ve been there only twice, for a week each time, and I have to admit I’ve only come across the most friendliest of people, much to my surprise – shock even.
We got lost in central Glasgow late one night for an hour driving around trying to find the M8 and everyone we stopped tried to be so helpful to us, even in some places where the housing looked bad [and the people rough], I’ve no idea where we were, we had no map, but eventually found our way thanks to their help.I can’t emphasise this enough as it really took me by surprise, and living in the south east here, I’m not used to that. People can be very aloof, uppity and quick to jump down your throat where I am.
A refreshing change on that score.
November 21, 2007 at 10:38 #126042crikey UM, thats quite a decision to have to make isn’t it! I spent a few days in Glasgow with my son studying Mackintosh and absolutely fell in love with the place; spent years saying to people not to automatically go to Edinburgh if they were planning a trip to Scotland [of course, no one believes you] However, my partner has a place in Bamburgh and we went up to Edinburgh on the train for the festival; of course I fell in love with that also. There are so many places to go up and down the east coast and the border country is spectacular. Guess it’s down to your priorities really. At least, either way you’ll get free prescriptions and free care when you get old and free university education etc etc. [err think I’ll move there myself…]
November 21, 2007 at 13:03 #126071yeah, free prescriptions…I could do with that already mo
…I love the north east coast there from Alnwick up to Berwick. If it was closer I’d be a regular visitor but it seems a million miles from us, quite awkward to get to. I have walked the beach at Bamburgh Castle – the country is beautiful and we always mean to make another trip, so I’m quite envious that you’re able to get there to see your partner. Of course it’s only a short hop from Edinburgh

Getting back to Glasgow, I did enjoy Loch Lomond and the Trossach Hills, which are just north of the city. A few minutes and it’s like being in another world – Luss is a pretty little place on the Loch. We had lunch there, something called a Stokie, which was an enormous filled bap as we call it – I only managed a quarter

Much preferable than not living in Scotland.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are both great places to live so long, as with any sizeable town or city, you are careful about location.
If you’re looking to live rurally there are many fantastic towns and villages within easy driving of both the major hubs and the public transport is good too if you don’t drive. Again, you need to be careful exactly where you choose but there are lots of good options.
You’ll find Glasgow, on the whole, a more open and friendly city (sorry GH and SDG) but Edinburgh has the edge for me. It is a truly oustanding city, both to visit and to live in.
I moved out of Edinburgh several years ago and live 40 minutes south of the city in a small town/village (it hasn’t made its mind up) in the Borders and for me it’s the best of both worlds. A great lifestyle, within an easy commute of the city and much, much more property for your money (Edinburgh is very expensive, as I’m sure you’ve already sussed).
I would suggest you keep the Scottish TRF’ers informed as you approach a decision as I’m sure that soemone will be able to help with more specific advice once you have a broad location in mind.
As for Salmond – a slippery eel but an extremely accomplished politician. Early days with the SNP yet.
Anyway – as we (the Scots) currently have a man in charge of both Scotland and England, not to mention Wales and N.I. then its all lads together.
November 21, 2007 at 14:39 #126098Sometimes as we’re driving round the borders we stop and look back and say to ourselves that you wouldn’t get a better view anywhere in Britain. Also the fact that Kelso is probably the nicest little racetrack that I’ve ever been to with most of the top northern horses running there at one time or another. H owever, I havn’t been to either city when it’s been really cold…
November 21, 2007 at 14:48 #126101Get a really lovely crofter’s cottage on an island and I’ll come visit!

Edinburgh’s nicer than Glasgow, well I think so, but I just love the highlands and the islands
How lucky you are to be moving north!!!November 21, 2007 at 15:37 #126114IGlasgow is Scotland’s largest city and ought to be the capital, I’m not biased I just deal with facts.
Jimbo, Glasgow isn’t even a city.
It’s a loose collection of slum dwellings and outhouses, held together by the skid-mark that is the M8.
It’s a fact – deal with it.

PS. Just kidding. It’s a well-known fact that Weedgie has by far and away the finest poon in Scotland. It must be the malnutrition that does it.
