Plenty of Grade 1 action in New Yoik, one of which is a 12 furlong turf event the legendary Aiden O’Brien sends one over for.
There’s rain in the forecast, maybe some thundery storms so we could have ground a bit like my punting, sloppy.
I expect Elite Power will extend his unbeaten run in the 8:07, a 7f event where he re-opposes with Gunite.
I like ‘New York Thunder’ in the 9:19, a 7f race for 3 year olds. He beat a couple of horses a long way at this track (half furlong shorter distance) that had previously finished a lot closer to current Baffert fav ‘Arabian Lion’. 2/1 on offer.

I’ve took a punt in the Sword Dancer stakes (10:31) on the turf with 12/1 shot ‘Pioneering Spirit’. He won a claimer over a furlong shorter a month back and has looked progressive. I think everyone has a bit to prove here.

The Travers (11:11) is the last race, a 10f event for 3 year olds and it brings about a few rematches. ‘Forte’ and ‘Mage’ re-oppose after the formers 9 furlong Kentucky Derby trial victory, the Derby being won by Mage with Forte scratched through injury. The other notable rematch is Forte vs ‘Arcangelo’ with the latter winning the Belmont stakes over 12f. I’ve gone for Mage at 4/1 as he is the one with the 10f form and is a respectable price for this.

I looked through these after sifting through all of the UK action, it’s taken some time but I can finally start making dinner…..at 1020pm.

Social media calls to not only abandon racing but shut down Saratoga race track as another horse sustains what looks like a fatal injury.

Both had Grade 1 races at their mercy at the time – not that this is relevant in what is now surely a severe health and safety issue.

Was my main bet of the evening, not that it matters but when you lose a race on the nod it’s a completely different feeling. One of woe is me.
Seeing what happened to New York Thunder with the race at his mercy, I just turned it off and don’t want to watch racing again for a little while.

Very worrying what’s happening in the USA. I’m off on hols there tomorrow so hopefully might get a feel of things while I’m there. Overshadowed a scarcely believable win by bolshoi ballet giving galileo his 100th group 1 winner.

I thought Bolshoi Ballet had already won a Group 1?

I think it was 100th Group 1 win as opposed to 100th Group 1-winning horse.

He has had far more than 100 Group 1 wins. It must be well over 300.

The Yorkshire Oaks winner was his 99th individual Group 1 winner.

Bolshoi Ballet had already won a Grade 1 at Belmont Park.

Fair enough – tbh I don’t take much notice of such things.

For me, the most notable thing about Bolshoi Ballet’s win last night was that I had money on him!

The important thing after all.👍 He’s got an entry into the breeders Cup turf so I’d imagine he will head there. Could sneak a place on the turning track.

Luxembourgs’ G1 win in the Tattersalls was Aidan’s 400th G1 winner worldwide.

Arcangelo was the real star last night on this card for me.

The Triple Crown is great if you have a forward 3yo who is ready for the test, but this colt swerved the first two legs, won the Belmont and now the Travers.

Best middle-distance dirt 3yo in the USA for me, along with Haskell winner Geaux Rocket Ride, who missed the Triple Crown altogether.

I wonder if a few European trainers will be thinking twice about the breeders Cup with what’s happening over the pond. I suppose if they have got a fast going horse they will still go. Be interesting to see if there is any drop in numbers.

There was an article about the relative safety of dirt/synthetic after the deaths the week of the kentucky derby

And the research they’d done showed it was significantly safer

They have to change surfaces otherwise the sport will be banned in the USA in the future I’d imagine

The figures for these meets include training accidents , thats a big difference from Europe , OZ etc . A lot horses train oncourse in OZ but the accidents only really make the mainstream news Spring Carnival time .
Who would know if an unraced or moderate horse dies on gallops in England , at Saratoga its included in figures for meet .
I still agree the dirt surface is tough but figures and stats can looked at a number of ways .
