Coming up tomorrow and looks to be a quality renewal with 7 of the 11 runners, including top 3 finishers, are here following their last run in the Belmont Derby Inv. (G1, 10F) in July. This race is about 110 yds shorter…

Here are the confirmed runners, with stall numbers, “current” odds (in brackets) per Paddy Power, and placing in their last race:

    4. Nations Pride (5/2) – 2nd. Belmont Derby Inv.
    6. Annapolis (3/1) – 1st. Manila (Listed)
    10. Stone Age (7/2) – 3rd. Belmont Derby Inv.
    3. Emmanuel (6/1) – 1st. Pennine Ridge (G2)
    9. Classic Causeway (8/1) – 1st. Belmont Derby Inv. (Note: it was his first start on turf)
    8. Sy Dog (20/1) – 6th. Belmont Derby Inv.
    7. Royal Patronage (20/1) – 5th. Belmont Derby Inv.
    2. Grand Sonata (20/1) – 4th Belmont Derby Inv.
    11. Ethereal Road (33/1) – 6th. Ohio Derby (G2, dirt)
    1. Main Event (50/1) – 1st Kent (G3)
    5. Stolen Base (66/1) – 12th. Belmont Derby Inv.

I’m hoping for Annapolis. Was highly regarded as a 2-yo following his win in the Pilgrim (G2, 8.5F) which is a major prep for the BC Juv Turf. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury (“hind ankle chip”) prior to the BC. Was 2nd in his 3-yo debut but subsequently won a Listed 1M at Belmont. With presence of Emmanuel here seems there’s plenty of pace for him to run at…

    Good luck!

Classic Causeway arguably had a soft lead and seemed to improve 10lb on anything he had done before at Belmont Park.

But even so, he broke two minutes for 1m2f and is a bigger price than horses he beat that day.

It was his first run on turf, not sure what took so long as he’s bred for it. It might have been the plan to cause a shock knowing the horse would improve all ends up switched to a grassy surface. I don’t quite understand why he’s available at 8/1. He went to the front, was too quick for anything else and recorded a good time.
If he does it again with this drop in trip then it could be simpler than the Belmont Derby. He might not even need to front run.
Annapolis defo the hype horse, potentially very smart and all that but his form is inconclusive so to be priced up at 3/1 across the boards is pretty stingy.

8/1 for Classic Causeway too good to ignore but I’m not sure what sort of race to expect so I’ll keep it slim.

Threat of thunderstorms for the day, any rains from them could be ground changing. Other than that, rain is expected but not enough to make a difference. I’d rather it stay away.

Nations Pride finally living up to the promise he showed when storming home in the Newmarket Stakes.

    He should continue to progress.

Classic Causeway ran an honest race in third.

Stone Age never struck me as a colt who wants fast ground and I don’t think he will ever get his surface out there.

Congratulations to the winning connections, particularly W. Buick who rode a trouble-free, terrific race. Good start, placing him just behind the leaders and moving at the right time at business end. Much the best rider and horse on the day. Although the official rating was “Good” that’s no excuse for any other runner. According to Classic Causeway’s jockey, he ran his race, no excuses and he simply got beat. As far as Annapolis, being by War Front, his limitations were exposed; he’s maxed out at 8F-9F…

The final leg of this “Turf Triple” switches back to Belmont for the Jockey Club Derby Invitational over 12F. The winner last year was Yibir on the way to his victory in BC Turf. Could Nations Pride follow in the same footsteps?…
