S4C Clwb was due to start showing live horse racing from Ffos Las today but this has had to be curtailed after Ffos Las sold the rights to S4C when they had no right to do so.
So persumably either Channel 4 or At The Races complained if it is Channel 4 then that’s a bit off as they never show Ffos Las even though they have they rights.
If it is ATR then do they have the rights to stop a course from being shown on a terrestrial channel?
I believe they way horse racing tv rights are sold in this country are dubious and need looking into, it appears to me ATR & RUK have too much control over the courses their parent companies own and the opportunity for others to get into the market is extremely limited.
October 14, 2014 at 06:59 #492291I would assume it’s ATR who’s complained. I don’t know, but presume there’s some agreement between the two digital racing channels and C4 which allows them to broadcast from their racetracks. Of course it could be ARC too, don’t they run Ffos Las for the owners? Maybe they didn’t get their cut?
October 14, 2014 at 08:14 #492294Slightly off topic but I thought C4 were going to show some of this Saturday’s Cheltenham races this year (after dropping the dash at Catterick ?)
Nothing on the C4 TV listing, RP or Sky+ TV Guide channel info though

LeeNot that I can see either looks like C4 are showing all six races at rain swamped Ascot… yawn
October 14, 2014 at 19:27 #492348>>It appears the deal that the Welsh-language broadcaster signed with Ffos Las Racecourse contravened Channel 4’s exclusive broadcast rights deal to cover horse racing on terrestrial television in the UK.
Commenting via Twitter, Jamie Aitchison, Channel 4’s commissioning editor for sport, directly addressed S4C’s official account (@S4C): “errr I don’t think you have the broadcast rights to do this?”
He added: “no one in the uk other than Channel 4 can tx racing terrestrially. You’ll be getting a tap on the shoulder.” <<
October 16, 2014 at 08:27 #492454Does their agreement cover ALL racing in the UK though? I know they’ve done deals for the major stuff, but did the agreement that they came to with racing industry over them paying C4 to keep showing racing include all racecourses? Given that they come nowhere near showing races from the majority of courses, it was a bit shortsighted on the part of the racing industry if they did.
October 16, 2014 at 09:09 #492462Sorry, wrong topic.
