Wish it was 5lbs and 7lbs penalties!! (personal interest might be clouding this though:) ) worth pointing out it is an open race as novices are catered for else where at the festival.
Think the race is great for horses rated 150-160 (Grade 2 horses in my eyes) and horses that need that 2 mile 5 trip eg Dublin Flyer, but true grade 1 horses must still go for one of the championship races for all our enjoyment.
Wish the Ascot chase got more prestige, just doesn’t seem a natural hole in the calender for it, some great winners but never really great fields.
Please Monets G go for the Queen Mother chase and My Way for the Sun Alliance chase !!
February 21, 2007 at 01:48 #39419On a slightly off tabgent note, I see Hills have brought out "prices" for the William Hill handicap chase. They are working to a very modest overround of 400% too!:o
Interesting that Little Brick heads the market at a skinny looking 5/1. Does anyone know if connections plan to run it in this race next?

Every owner and breeder would still aim to have a Gold Cup winner rather than a Ryanair winner.
But the status of races can change over time for a number of reasons. That maybe an ongoing process. There is every possibility that ryanair chase winners could be one by those type of horses that are very good over 3 miles but perhaps not getting the gold cup distance. One man, florida pearl types …..perhaps even kauto star types. This could lead to a situation whereby we would be having dual king George-Ryanair chase types, and therefore those people who argue that the gold cup is not really 3 milers race could be proved right. Better horses winning a race will always raise its profile. We would also find that young horses might dodge the Gold cup and we would have less "will they stay arguments". It might be possible that high class horses who had been running at 2mile 4 would also rather then drop back in distance (and into the unknown).
Overall my point is that you shouldnt assume that the status or prestige of a race like the gold cup and King George are beyond compromise.

Actually Mounty, I am one of that weird percentage of the population that is sh*t-scared of flying.
And I mean really phobic…

February 21, 2007 at 17:39 #39422why did the grade one betfair chase end up at haydock? given that most of the best horses are trained in the south wouldnt the race be better off at ascot instead of asking all the horses to battle up the dreaded m6?
February 21, 2007 at 17:50 #39423That meeting at Haydock is part of a 2 day event with Aintree called the North West Masters it’s run the day b4 the beecher chase maybe thats why its run at haydock plus the south have there fair share of races

Despite the dubious decision to introduce portable fences at Haydock it remains a superlative chasing track and one long overdue a G1 Chase. In any case the Betfair Chase is really no more than an upgrading of the long established Edward Hanmer Chase
I’d also suggest that having the early season G1 staying events run LH and then RH (King George) is a better test of the horses concerned – and allows the punter more insight – than having both the same way round as would be the case if the Betfair was run at Ascot.
There is Newbury of course but that track seems well enough endowed quality wise as it is.
February 22, 2007 at 02:19 #39425Without wishing to overly discourage fans of Little Brick it may pay to have a look at M Pipe’s record in the NH Chase as it is nothing short of disastrous
Best Regards
