This years renewal threw up a very deserved winner in Frodon, and though they’ll surely be tempted with The Gold Cup, I hope they focus on retaining their title. This race is just tailor made for him.
I really shouldn’t embarass myself by mentioning The Storyteller again, but I haven’t totally given up on him. With possible excuses this year (and yes, they would have to be very good excuses), then I might risk him again.
Sensible head on, and more realistic options would be A Plus Tard, and Defi Du Seuil.
I’ll be mentioning A Plus Tard for everything bar The Boat Race in the coming months, but I just think he looked a proper star in The Close Bros, and of all the races I have in mind for him, this looks the most suitable right now. Time will tell if he wants to step up in trip. Current price looks fair.
It looked a substandard renewal of The JLT, but nothing wrong with the front two. I think Lostintranslation will head for The Gold Cup, leaving his old rival, DDS, to this race. Rock solid claims here the Hobbs horse, and 10’s is realistic, however I’d want double that right now for any horse in this race, given the contenders are usually versatile for trip.
Cyrname and Altior are the obvious big guns who could be heading here, and as far as this race goes, I suppose we just have to wait and see if they come into the picture. Obviously massive players if they do, while if Greatrex relents a little, then La Bague Au Roi might be another to come into the picture. That doesn’t look certain though.
None of the prices appeal right now though, and happy to wait. Gun to head, my early shouts would be this trio, and of them, Frodon looks the most generous, not often you’ll see a price like that for a defending champ, especially one who’s just did it that impressively…..
A Plus Tard 20’s
Frodon 16’s
Defi Du Seuil 10’sMarch 25, 2019 at 18:31 #1404767Put up DEFI DU SEUIL 16/1 and every chance of him going well here as not a 2m horse and doubt get further to
March 25, 2019 at 20:15 #1404775Yeah Darren, must have live chance, but unlikely I’ll bet in this till next season.
March 25, 2019 at 20:55 #1404780I’ve had a few quid on Monalee
boosted with Ladbrokes to 28’s
Target this race again and should map out a different route to it, possibly
they were disappointed with the run and I think they believe they thought they were going to win it
Unless Altior turns up he’ll be a single figure price on the day I’d expectBlackbeard to conquer the World
March 26, 2019 at 06:34 #1405546A couple of horses that we shouldn’t forget about…. they’re not betting propositions at this point due to their injury records but if their fortunes change then you want to be with them not against them:
Douvan
Sutton PlaceI also think Master Dino is worth keeping an eye on given his billing before injury too prevented him from taking his place at this year’s Festival
Completely agree with Cyrname, Defi Du Seuil and La Bague Au Roi
April 30, 2019 at 19:46 #1429919I love Sutton Place CNC, and I had high hopes for him, but he just seems so difficult to keep sound. I’d love to see him back, but not confident.
Looked to me as if A Plus Tard didn’t stay a bit tonight, so he’s still near top of shortlist here, but haven’t bet him yet.
April 30, 2019 at 20:15 #1429920I agree with you VtC in that I don’t think A Plus Tard stayed. He was travelling nicely throughout but had nothing more to give at the business end of things. To be honest I always find Punchestown throws up a few strange results so I don’t attach quite as much weight to the form as other early / mid season races.
I think Min will also head here now, although he looked a tired horse today. Always tricky to run at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown.
April 30, 2019 at 20:49 #1429926On A Plus Tard, he’s young, got course form and trainer knows what it takes to win this, but i honestly don’t think he’s good enough unless progressing. He’d need to progress more than most too as he’s been getting an age allowance. He’s also probably reliant on soft ground.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!May 1, 2019 at 00:21 #1429944Yeah, I’d like to have seen more myself tonight Jack, but I’m willing to forgive that one. Trainer will surely target him here as well.
October 25, 2019 at 19:43 #1472753Ill have frodon to do it all again
October 27, 2019 at 21:38 #1473018A little bit disappointed with Frodon today, but at least his price holding provides some consolation.
October 28, 2019 at 12:43 #1473043Plenty of Ditcheat horses needing their their reappearance run so Frodon ran well enough for my liking
November 9, 2019 at 20:11 #1474460A Plus Tard out tomorrow.
Still hoping he heads Ryanair, but first things first, I’m hoping for improvement from when we last seen him, for all he had a few things against him that day.
November 10, 2019 at 06:20 #1474473Just looking at the card for the race on the Racing Post app… apparently, A Plus Tard is a horse “who’s (sic) form is over further.”
This coming from a (supposedly) professional journalist. How do these people get these jobs?
November 10, 2019 at 12:14 #1474485Today’s race is over 2 miles. All his form in GB and Ireland has been between 2m 3f and 3m 1f.
November 10, 2019 at 14:00 #1474503I think Gladiateur was referring to the incorrect use of the contraction “who’s” rather “whose” which denotes possession (of the form figures by the horse).
Mind you I’m a nerd who gets annoyed by this sort of thing too.
(Big Buck’s what ??
Definitly Red…surely cannot spell).Perhaps the RP journo needs that American app with the annoying ads. Grammarly. Ugh. It’s not even an adverb just a made-up annoying word.
November 10, 2019 at 14:05 #1474505All his form in GB and Ireland has been between 2m 3f and 3m 1f.
This puts me off him a bit- before Cheltenham the choice was Close Brothers or RSA rather than Close Brothers or JLT, let alone the Arkle. Mind you DDG had an Albert Bartlett entry the year before and is by a staying sire so 2 miles might not be his optimal trip either.
