Can’t see Cue Card getting things his own way up front and with doubts around the participation of some of the others at the top of the betting I think the 15/2 on Riverside Theatre looks big. A prep run would have been nice but I’m not convinced that’s a big issue and expect Henderson to have Riverside at peak fitness come next Thursday.
March 7, 2013 at 17:12 #431582Should be another cracker. Ridiculous that some cannot see it’s worth
The Rynair dilutes the Gold Cup and Champion Chase fields dramatically.
The race was ludicrously promoted from Grade 2 to Grade 1 after the only winners of the race were three horses who had never won a single UK Grade 1 Chase between them.
Some horses of the calibre of Riverside Theatre, Cue Card, Sizing Europe, Flemenstar, First Lieutenant, Sir Des Champs, and more will no doubt take in this consolation prize robbing the two flagship Chases of their presence.
I am a traditionalist, and i do not like this fact.
You can like the race if you like, I’m not so self-absorbed as to claim you are ridiculous for disagreeing with me.
March 7, 2013 at 17:35 #431585for me it’s not such a problem though as the idea of a ryanair hurdle.
I could be wrong but it seems to me theres far more high-class chasers in training than there are hurdlers. thats because a lot of horses start off hurdling but become chasers, it rarely happens the other way around.
the gold cup is still a cracker but the champion chase has been decimated.

I agree, will almost definitely throw a bit on RT but going to wait until the day before to see what the weather’s like.

Agree with you there – robs the festival of horses that used to take their chance and sometimes win the bigger races in years gone past. What do they think the owners are going to do ? swerve the better horses !

It’s even worse with the novice races – used to be arkle & rsa + open handicaps; now any amount of options.

Some of the horses can’t stay the Gold Cup trip. Some aren’t quick enough for 2 miles. They need this race.

Its those poor souls that are not quick enough for 2m but don’t stay 2m5f that I feel for. The NEED a Grade 1 over 2m 2.5f.
March 8, 2013 at 11:08 #431647There’s a big difference between 2 miles and 3 mile 2f of the gold cup, so there’s definitely a need for an interim race.
I think the champion chase has been cut up due to owners running scared of one horse more than the fact there is an option over further. If Cue Card was a crack 2 miler he would be heading for the champion. As he’s not he has a good chance of winning the race over further because he’s not fast enough to win a champion chase.
He certainly wouldn’t stay 3 mile 2f so why go for the gold cup either?March 8, 2013 at 15:24 #431674Its those poor souls that are not quick enough for 2m but don’t stay 2m5f that I feel for. The NEED a Grade 1 over 2m 2.5f.

Yawn.
Makes abosolutely no sense to have championship races at the standard distances that are contested throughout the season and yet not have that distance catered for at the NH Festival.
Many seem to be under the illusion that more runners makes a better race. Back when Moscow, Azerty and Well Chief were sparring in the 2 mile division, there were 8 runners in the Champion yet only Moscow and Azerty won. It was basically a 3 horse race anyway.
Last year, with the Ryanair now established, there were…8 runners and only two or three had a realistic chance. The two best horses saw out the finish
Meanwhile the Gold Cup is as strong as it has been for eons. When Best Mate won his 2nd there were 15 runners and most didn’t stand a chance. last few years there’s been 13 or 14 runners and they’ve been better races. Granted the staying division has more quality than it did 10 years ago, but the Ryanair Chase does not detract from the quality of the other Championship races or the horses winning them
It’s either snobbery or naivety suggesting it does.
There should be a 2.5 mile senior Grade 1 race.

I’m not sure where snobbery or naivety come in to it.
Interesting you refer to Well Chief, Azertyuiop and The Flyer. If the Rynair was around at the time, would they have clashed at Chelts? I doubt it.

He certainly wouldn’t stay 3 mile 2f so why go for the gold cup either?on soft ground there would be a whole lot of other horses that would go the qm race. He would stand a chance against SS in a big field – SS might be able to settle in small fields but against a full Champion CHase field it might not be the case.
thats the point

They were all two milers.
I doubt you’ll see any 2 milers in the Ryanair this year.

You reckon Finians Rainbow will go to face Sprinter Sacre? With the soft ground forecast I could see connections moving to that.

Cue Card is better over 2 miles than 2 and a half imo. The Ryanair is a good race but I’d be strongly against the idea of a hurdle race for older horses over 2 and a half miles.
March 9, 2013 at 23:41 #431866In my opinion the Ryanair is too much prize money for the effort it takes to win the race ,it is a dead loss as a race and is THE race that is all that is wrong about the diluted modern day Chelt festival .Basically who gives a toss who wins the Ryanair?
