Yep, I thought it was needless and he made a bit of prat of himself to be honest. I think he realised just in time!
March 17, 2010 at 15:03 #283298Another belting result for the bookies!
Poor from Davy Russell IMO after such a great performance in the race he spits his dummy out about Big Mac’s rant at O’Connell. Why not talk about the thrilling performance his horse has just put up?
It’s a sport where you’re gonna come in for a bit of stick now and again and you need to be big enough to take it. Grow up Davy!
Couldn’t agree with you more.
A fine jockey (I’d have him on Denman), but I felt slightly embarrassed for him.
March 17, 2010 at 15:04 #283300Davy Russell is a legend of the weigh room. Some man to say that, Big Mac was out of order this morning!
March 17, 2010 at 15:05 #283301He should know that Big Mac wasn’t going to apologise, he should just get on with it.
They are professional sportsmen, they get praised, so they expect to come in for criticism too.
March 17, 2010 at 15:07 #283304Have not seem the time yet but they did not seem to go that fast. Long Run seemed to be sweating quite badly at the start. Took a hold, made a few mistakes. I had 5/1 Long Run and 100/30 Punchestowns. Long run did not stay (with sweating and pulling).
I heard Punchestowns was being trained with plastic shoes. For a horse to then race on what I consider good / good-firm ground is asking a lot.
Can’t aportion blame on either jockey. Burton Port was not quick enough in the closing stages too.
Happy for the trainer C Byrnes, after Solwhit.
Value Is EverythingMarch 17, 2010 at 15:08 #283306Distraught
Citizen Vic died
I thought he was going to win for me

but such a classy jumper died today.
Was as good as any of them today.
The stable must be distraught he was a star.

Day is not worth anything after that nw
March 17, 2010 at 15:10 #283309I know it’s no consolation, wallace but he didn’t suffer..however, I know how you feel.

Gutted! He was part of a winning double in Ireland the other Sunday for me.
Didn’t back him today, but what a gutter!
March 17, 2010 at 15:14 #283312To think he what he could have achieved
Jumped them silly….and doing it keen.
March 17, 2010 at 15:15 #283314RIP Citizen Vic.
March 17, 2010 at 16:16 #283344Sad to hear. 2 gone now, hopefully stops there.
Long Run didn’t stay, don’t think Punchestowns did either.
March 17, 2010 at 16:24 #283347Punchestowns didn’t jump well enough, maybe only 2 runs wasn’t enough experience, Diamond Harry struggled also and the others all had plenty more experience over the bigger obstacles than the aforementioned pair.

Sad new about Citizen Vic.
In the race itself once again we have been fooled into thinking horses that are pretty ordinary are something special.
I think Long Run has a big future though but Puchestowns like last year was a flop.
March 17, 2010 at 19:42 #283395I wouldn’t say Punchestowns flopped last year. Tight finish with the superb Big Bucks. His shoe came off today apparently.
I don’t understand why so many people are so quick to write horses off after 1 bad performance. I guess many would have done that when Big Zeb flopped at Sandown. Someone has to lose.
March 17, 2010 at 21:40 #283433Gutted about the loss of Citizen Vic at the second last. Could immediately see it was fatal.
Once again this notorious fence has claimed a horse that was otherwise a very safe jumper.
Gutted for all the connections – he did not deserve that.
March 17, 2010 at 21:58 #283435An intriguing race to watch unfold.
John Francome voiced concerns about Punchestowns fencing ability on The Morning Line and, just like Captain Cee Bee, he was proved correct.
I watched the horse jump from fence-to-fence and it was quite obvious from very early in the contest that he would struggle to land a blow. He’s not the most athletic horse, quite cumbersome actually, and I think he will struggle to reach the same level of form over fences.
He was reported lame behind afterwards, so it may prove wise to give him another chance, but I think he has a mountain to climb.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Nicky said on his ATR preview that he would like to have another crack at Big Buck’s. Was he hinting at something?
I thought Long Run ran a marvellous race and Sam Waley-Cohen did nothing wrong. Perhaps this horse could do with a bit more assistance from the saddle whilst he learns his craft, but I couldn’t fault the jockey today.
I think this is just the beginning for this most precocious talent. I had no reservations about him surviving Cheltenham and whilst he did make a couple of very small errors, the horse never looked like falling and he will eliminate them from his game as he gains more experience over British fences.
He travelled as sweetly as the winner, but Weapons Amnesty is perhaps a little too strong and streetwise for him at this stage of his career and I wouldn’t give up on him developing into a Gold Cup horse a few years down the line. The talent is there and connections would be folly not to have a crack at it two or three years from now.
They’re quite keen on the King George next season and I see no realistic challenger to Kauto Star except this chap, who has already shown his liking for the course and distance, albeit against much inferior opposition.
Weapon’s Amnesty has been touted as a potential Gold Cup horse next season and I’ve heard one quote of 10/1. In my opinion, I think that’s terrible value and would be very surprised to see him progress to that level, likable as he is. He clearly likes Cheltenham and stays very well, but I’d be more interested in Burton Port as a novice stepping up next season and challenging in that sphere.
Finally, I would like to pass on my condolences to the connections of Citizen Vic, who was in the process of running a fine race. RIP, Vic.
March 17, 2010 at 22:28 #283446I think now Weapons Am looks a real good smashing 3mile chaser.
He may not do it from Oct-March but once he sets foot come Festival Time he is a different Monster all together.
He jumping was magnificent considering he was considered a poor jumper.
Very disappointed with Henderson’s pair. Punchestown’s a poor jumper and the greatest jockey said that. Long Run was all over the shop pulled….head side to side….didn’t jump great…didn’t look to stay. Hmmm surely he is much better than that but no confidence in SWC or any other jock than Ruby Walsh to get that yoke to achieve his potential
