This is the forgotten race this year. I couldn’t even find a thread on here so have made one up! The reason? There are not many top class older 10f horses are there? Looking at this race and reading the Post this morning, Free Eagle is not a certain runner, Al Kazeem is out, Arab Spring looks more of a 12f type and The Grey Gatsby was disappointing the last twice and needs to bounce back. That leaves Western Hymn who is clearly good but surely not THAT good, a Kiwi horse called Criterion who beat the mighty Red Cadeaux last time out and Ectot. So yes it is time to start banging my Ectot drum again!!! I know he was a complete flop in the Arc but hindsight shows that was not his trip and he pulled like a train over that longer distance. He has been trained for this race and recent reports suggest he will go there fit and with every chance. He is still available at 9’s and I think he may be value as he will surely go off shorter than that if he makes it to post. I still have faith in this horse after seeing his superb turn of foot last year so will be having a bit of 9’s and hoping he gets there in one piece.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
June 8, 2015 at 19:11 #1099747Probably forgotten as it looks quite open and undecided, not sure what the final entries will be as you mention. As an outsider Berkshire would be interesting, but a concern we haven’t seen him yet. He tends to pop up at big prices and has already won at Ascot, which is a plus, in the Chesham a few years ago.
Always expect the unexpected.
June 8, 2015 at 20:45 #1099854I would have thought that Free Eagle would line up here, we shall see.
Bags of potential and if he does line up I wouldn’t back another, as long as there is still a decent price on offer.June 9, 2015 at 07:12 #1100154with so many ifs and buts(double entry’s and ?? about fitness with others)think this race could fall to bits. I have given The Grey Gatsby another chance.Hope the ground is quick and the 6s e/w could prove ok on the day(I know you can get slightly better, but thats with 365 NRNB)
June 9, 2015 at 11:33 #1100280There is a huge dearth of older horses at 10 and 12f. It’s mostly due to horses being rushed off to stud. Indeed coolmore have Australia, magician, war command, ruler of the world,Adelaide and Verrazano all gone to stud. Also the likes of eagle top and western hymn haven’t come forward means there is huge gaps there and means the likes of golden horn, new bay and jack Hobbs could well clean up when the 3yos start taking on the older horses. Free eagle could well be the one to take them on but is so fragile you can’t be sure where he will run. The grey gatsby doesn’t to be as good as last year on the evidence of the last race. So low looks to me the best of the older horses and its a good job the like of able friend is heading to royal ascot or we could well have had some group ones very short of any depth in them.
June 14, 2015 at 17:08 #1105060SPIELBERG, my main Royal Ascot bet this year. On his Tenno Sho and Japan Cup runs, he wins.
June 14, 2015 at 20:32 #1105092The Great Gatsby was very disappointing last time, but the ground might have been on the slightly sticky side for him, and they went a slow pace which would have been all against him as he’s a galloping type that stays well.
To me he represents excellent value as the highest rated horse in the race.
June 15, 2015 at 14:58 #1105407Free Eagle has been trained specifically with this race in mind.
Working well at home and fresh as a daisy.Free Eagle

June 15, 2015 at 18:27 #1105591What a wonderfully international field.
Love to see the Grey Gatsby win, he’s one of my favourites. Also interested to see how good Free Eagle is

June 17, 2015 at 21:10 #1106153How unlucky was the Grey Gatsby?
I liked the way Kevin Ryan stayed so cool in his interview, I was spitting feathers.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 17, 2015 at 21:20 #1106158Me too Nathan!! Grrrrrrrrrr !!!
With any sort of run it wins.
Frankie kept him in for just long enough to stop him winning. It was just race riding and good race riding at that.
I Am talking out of my pocket because I had a e/w trixie with Dutch Connection the Grey gatsby and Osaila. Cost me over two grand!! And I am yet to find a bookie that pays out on nearly’s !!June 17, 2015 at 21:31 #1106162I cant see Free Eagle being any sort of decent price in his next race after that. Good training performance yes, but you have to be a pretty special horse to win a group 1 after so long without having a race. He must have been 85% fit at the most, no matter how much work had gone in to him.
Obviously, TGG was unlucky, but still…….special horse.June 18, 2015 at 10:04 #1106532Kevin Ryan must have been so frustrated in clearly having the best horse and yet finishing second. Hollow win for free eagle as the second was much the better horse which if he gets the same ground next time he will reverse the finish. IMHO.
June 18, 2015 at 10:29 #1106541Wow, The Grey Gatsby completely proved me wrong. He looks a superstar to be honest.
