From a punting perspective, there must be an edge in having younger horses racing against older horses, especially in handicaps where there may be discrepencies
Interesting you should mention that, Marble. In a similar vein, it’s about this time of year that 4yos first get let into handicap chases, and are accorded absolutely stonking weight allowances.
I probably won’t have the time to record the findings systematically, but one slight change to how I approach such races for the next few months is going to be by looking at the 4yos first, and see if there is any way reason why they should prove incapable of making such an allowance count.
Yesterday’s Summer Cup at Stratford was a case in point. The line-up included two 4yos in Bantry Bere and Saint Kadette, the latter of whom already boasted winning 3yo chase form in Auteuil. The – count them – 17lb worth of grace they each got on account of their age offered quite a seductive case, but not quite as seductive as the counter that neither had shown in this country that 2m4f represents their best trip.
As it was, Saint Kadette bailed out before the race begain in earnest, but Bantry Bere was well enough held in fourth or fifth.
