    Welfare for jockeys overcast by a journalist, a little disapointed with TRF here but nevertheless here goes, fingers crossed theres some who might actually care;

ROBERT THORNTON was expected to spend Tuesday night under observation in hospital following his crashing fall at Leicester, but he is not thought to have been seriously injured.

Thornton was riding Cracboumwiz for Alan King in the three-runner Dick Christian Novices’ Chase when his mount fell at the third-last fence while battling for the lead with The Polomoche, who was left to come home alone.

Thornton was carried off the course on a stretcher before an ambulance took him to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he was visited by fellow jockey Andrew Tinkler.

A hospital spokesman said: "He is in our emergency department at the moment, awaiting x-rays, and is in a stable condition".

Tinkler said: "I believe they are keeping him in tonight for observation, and x-rays, but from what I gather it isn’t serious.

"I saw him for about a minute and a half, and he thought he would be okay. He was just in a little bit of discomfort in his kidney area."

You posted this prior to your contribution to the journalism thread then?

Ignoring the fact that, as far as we know, Robert Thornton hasn’t been seriously injured and remains in hospital as a matter of precaution, I don’t think people enjoy being told where their priorities should lie – especially when such a patronising remark is made by someone who themselves saw fit to comment on the journalsim thread before this one.

    Get well soon, Choc.

    Better?

Whatever Guys! The thought was there to create a thread and thats what counts! I too hope Robert makes a quick and full recovery as he is to Alan Kings success what Ruby Walsh is to Paul Nicholls! I also need him back for Cheltenham and Voy Por in the Ryanair,as Choc has ridden him in all but one of his 27 British starts and even though Wayne Hutchison had ridden a double on the card the day Choc missed the ride,it was AP who took the mount!Voy Por needs Choc aboard and so do i,Get well soon!

Mr Wilson – i look forward to you making similar threads for all the jockeys that pick up an injury.

Agree with what you are saying – however it could also be argued that Choc should not have ridden VPU at last years festival – he (Choc) was carrying an injury and could not have given 100% effort – he looked in a terrible state coming back in after the race.

And there is a photograph of him coming in on Blazing Bailey, after the following race, clutching his injured rib.

However these jump jockeys are a tough bunch and Choc once said to me something along the lines of we know we are going to take falls and get hurt, yet we still do it They know the risks they take and they are brave lads, I’m sure he will soon be back.

I would’ve thought that as racing fans with internet access, it’s sort of implied that we all know Choc had a fall & that we all wish him a speedy recovery isn’t it?

On the subject of jockeys falling, does anyone know the protocol about whether a jockey is supposed to stay with the horse after a fall or not?

I bring it up because at Haydock on Saturday, the horse Charlie Tipple took quite a heavy fall in the opener & appeared to be on the deck for quite some time. I was a little surprised to see the jockey trudge down the straight to the weighing room to be (thankfully) followed by the horse five or so minutes later.

    Anthony,

I don’t believe there is an official protocol regarding jockeys staying with fallen horses, although I would say most, including the top ones, do stay with the horse at least until the stable lad / lass turns up.

I would hope all jockeys would stay with the horse and would also hope the jockey you referred to got a bollocking from the trainer if he had walked off.

Paul,i would argue that had Voy Por not blundered 7 out and again 4 out, when Choc asked for a big one and all that came up was his reins,Voy por would have defineately won,i think Choc may well have come in feeling pain but when he"s sat on a beast like Voy por travelling at 30mph in a grade one race at Cheltenham, his adrenalin would have got him through the race,i certainly cant see where Choc is to blame for his defeat! He will make amends this year,so grab the 10/1 before its too late!

I saw the horse coming back with stable people. Maybe they said he was alright to go back.

I’m actually pretty certain I saw Charlie Tipple & jockey get a lift up to the start in a horse box & he was there ages before the start. I need to get some proper binoculars!

Was a horrible fall for both horse and jockey.

Was hoping Choc would be on Mille Chief tomorrow at Huntingdon, but seems unlikely now.

Hope he is ok and keeping him in is just a pre-caution.

He looked a bit fragile on his way back. I hope he’s ok.
