:)

Much as I dislike seeing R Hills on anything I bet, I went in heavily today on RTL because he was on it. He remains, in my view, the best front-running jockey in the country. Unfortunately few of his rides are on front-runners but he showed on the Stoute filly on Friday how well he rides front runners, especially on tracks with a bend.

I agree he’s very good, T528. After that, it’s personal opinion. Robinson is the better all-round jockey by far.

I’m going to disagree with both of you by saying I think a certain L.Dettori is the best jockey riding from the front.

And you’re fully entitled to your opinion, War Admiral. I’ve seen Frankie excel from the front and maybe it’s because he’s such an all-round good jockey he doesn’t get as much credit as he should for those occasions when he makes all.

However, I’d argue that Hills has the highest strike rate on front-running rides of any of those mentioned.

…and Smart Enough and Rajeem not two weeks ago, Trackside. Quality judge.

But I agree with Maurice. Hillsy takes some serious flak and is as weak as a lamb in a finish, but he is probably the best judge of pace upfront since Cauthen.

He learned the skill with Harry Thomson Jones, who liked his horses ridden prominently.

Sorry to reply to myself, but Mickey Fenton is a good pilot for a front runner, (admittedly at a lower level, Speciosa excepted).

In a related digression, he has Kapellmeister at Windsor tonight for the Saunders yard. Drawn 13.

My opinion of R Hills is starting to change a little. I thought he did well to get the horse to the front and then timed the spurt well.

Just spotted this on Mordin’s website. Not after-timing, as some of you will know that I sided with Road To Love at Goodwood in a big way.

If racing analysis were as simple as Mordin likes to make out I’d take up something more demanding….like tiddlywinks.

ROAD TO LOVE (37) is an entertaining horse to watch. He always tears off into the lead and is very hard to pull back as long as he’s racing in a relatively small field as he was when scoring impressively at Ascot. For most horses of this type the cut-off point is 11 runners, and this seems to be the case with Road To Love. When there are more than 11 runners he gets pressed for the lead too hard and folds up. But in fields of 11 or less he has now won three of the four times he’s run beyond sprint trips, with the only horse to beat him being the smart Formal Decree.

The great thing about a horse like Road To Love is that he’s what you might call consistently inconsistent. He runs clunkers as often as he runs races like the one he did at Ascot. But it should be pretty easy to predict which way he’ll run. Just look at the field size.

10 rivals who are all speedy front runners = back Road To Love.

11 rivals who are not so well drawn as him and who are habitually held up = lay Road To Love.

    It’s almost charmingly naive.

The whole of Goodwood this week has been charmingly naive, Prufrock. A six pack week if I ever saw one.

    1: Go to bank.
2. Withdraw a grand.
3. Back favourites blind.
4. Buy more drink. Chat up women in floral dresses and big hats.
5. Play up favourites.
6. Get hammered and have the time of your life.

    As for value seekers…:(

I prefer value finders than value seekers. ;)

Yes, it has made shelling peas seem onerous at times, though Tabadul hanging on would have been nice….:(

Hah! All wins are a value FIND, Prufrock.

Every so often there are weeks like this where I wish I had never read any of the fifty odd books on my shelves about avoiding favs, looking for an angle, pace, speed, value odds, probabilities and how backing favourites, (running at 35% this year, overall) is the fast track to skid row.

Bodes Galaxy would have made me a happy man, Prufrock. A man with a smile as wide as the Amazon. As it was, the suited boys from Brighton got another round in.

Let’s be honest. Drawn 2. Opposition from Cumani, (five time winner of the race), Stoute, (twice), an Elsworth improver, several other pace setters, and a Pricewise tipped Tregoning anything horse. 5/2? Yeh right. Of COURSE it’s going to scoot in.

It was a group horse (ecplise winner EC said :o ) in a handicap

    And im not aftertiming …..HA!

(think Newmarket failure was down to course just being very tough for front runners and wasnt it a bit windy that day?)
