How come O’Brien was riding this and not Johnson, who was on Quattrocento?
October 17, 2008 at 19:24 #185138Owner’s prerogative I would imagine. He probably feels that the horse does best with Tom on board and his form of last season would tend to support that view.
October 17, 2008 at 22:59 #185164Shame about Razor Royale falling at the 2nd last, would’ve been interesting to see what Ring The Boss had left.
5 fallers at the 2nd last today, by the way. Has re-sighting it worked?
October 17, 2008 at 23:58 #185169…I don’t think it was re sited, but they made some minor amendment.
However, all today’s official fallers at Cheltenham were at the 2nd last fence, 4 in total plus a UR, and people think this is a championship course, fit for the very best races? this fence is a lottery, it’s pure luck and is the ruination of so many chases at this venue. Yet dare mention any suggestion of change and one is usually patronised with something like ”it’s what racing is all about”..or somesuch.Amazing how so many people just put up and shut up as if it’s some sort of ‘holy cow’ that cannot be touched.
Some of the best races ruined, on one of the worst courses in the country.
..yes I backed Razor Royale
October 18, 2008 at 01:01 #185174I did Razer Royale too, and Frankie Figg.
But if they do any more to ‘modify’ the course they might as well just turn it into a flat course. No more changes….
October 18, 2008 at 01:11 #185177I think the Cheltenham fences are stiff enough to put a big emphasis on jumping. Horses who jump stickily or belt one aren’t going to get away with it – and this is how it should be.
Even without the 2nd last as it is currently, this would be true. It often catches out horses who jump it perfectly which is surely against the spirit of our game. Enough races (and lives) have been lost because of this silly tradition.
October 18, 2008 at 03:34 #185195I’ll be taking the winner on for the rest of the season- doesn’t look a natural jumper to me.
October 18, 2008 at 13:06 #185235I didn’t see a great deal wrong with his jumping, to be honest, and he might be capable of better than he showed yesterday, if he gets a decent sized field and is able to come from off a strong pace.

I think we all did rather better than write it off as “just part of racing” the last time two out on the Old Course was discussed, UM. Here once more is one of the very best TRF threads, well, possibly ever;
