But the majority of his blurb is an advertisement. Great to be with RF etc. I write for SL & the Mirror. I rode famous horses, now here’s the info about my tipping line.

Of course it is as was the recent competition you had to open an account to enter but so what?

In case you hadn’t noticed this forum exists because it is sponsored and a place where people like Richard Dunwoody can advertise. Without them there would be no forum.

Even if those who run this forum are making a decent profit don’t you thing they deserve it?

The hours put into running this place must be endless and it cost you nothing.

On alighter note, I think it’s great news and you should all join Richards tipping service…….Then you can tell me what he’s tipping and I won’t have to pay

Being a reasonably well-mannered chap I wouldn’t dream of soiling Mr Dunwoody’s very own TRF red stickie with a post…

…but for goodness sake, if the inaugural ‘effort’ with its vacuous non-commital reportage, and brown-nosing of a fellow jockey is a sign of what’s to come then I for one don’t need it, and given the brazen advertising which appears to be the heavy load on the light vehicle, actually detest it.

Any number of TRF’s own correspondents are capable of producing far more illuminating articles on Big Zeb, AP McCoy…whatever…whatever. It’s their words I want to read: the words of the great unwashed man on the street…the whole

    raison d’etre

    of message boards

    Is

    Quest For Fame

your all-time favourite horse Cormack? :?

Judge the man on one post if you want to.

I’ll give him a little more time to prove himself, one way or the other.

Do think people should give Richard a chance. If it turns out to be nothing but an advertisement, then say so at the time.

    Ginger
I believe the majority of posters already have.

Who said I am talking about the majority?

    – I would LOVE to publish articles by any one of a score or more TRF’ers in the Features section should they want to write them and send them through to me (david@theracingforum.co.uk)

If I was putting Richard’s column up INSTEAD of something else I would see your point but it’s an

    EXTRA

that people can either read or not. I don’t believe we have placed a single obstruction to what you term the ‘man in the street’ posting on TRF – in fact, via the Features section of the site, the new Horse pages (plus the brand new Jockeys pages – of which more later) and our Facebook presence people have more ways than ever to post on TRF.

I did like Quest for Fame – I was there the day he won his Derby. I guess, though, that you’re making a reference to ego and all I can say is that I do have ambitions to grow TRF and I’m not afraid to try different and new things to achieve that goal – what’s wrong with that?

Having something like Richard’s column is something that we’ve thought might be a nice add-on for some time and we’ve worked out a deal with the former champion whereby it is possible (through having some links on there to his own commercial operation) for us to achieve that. It might not be everyone’s thing but you’ll see on this thread that there are people who are very much looking forward to reading Richard’s articles.

    Aidan

    – Richard does write for a variety of publications and I expect there will be some duplication although we have been promised a level of

    exclusive

content so that is something well keep an eye on as we go forward. If we simply receive copy that people can read elsewhere then I agree it’s pointless, although, as I have said, some duplication is inevitable.

    TAPK

    – send me 1,000 words on the King George by tonight, 6pm and you have a deal – half Richard’s fee right?

    MrP

    – I suspect Richard wont post apart from the articles but we’ll be setting up his own TRF account and we’ll be inviting him to participate in a Q&A section shortly so he might pop something on, you never know.

I think the sub-text to some of the comments is a fear that in some way TRF are selling out and, I guess to some of you, the appearance of a column by an industry ‘insider’ such as Richard, complete with links to his commercial operation, are seen as further evidence of that. I know we had a similar debate on the thread where we discussed a closer arrangement with the BHA.

If I can be quite candid for a second (and at the risk of repetition from previous debates) –

    1. TRF needs income to a)survive and b) to grow. That income comes from advertising and commercial links with other organisations. I dont make any apologies for that.

    2. I believe that if the site isnt changing and growing then it quickly becomes stagnant and stale and therefore we’ll be continuing to try new things and new ideas – some of them will work, some won’t. Some people will like the new stuff, some won’t. Hopefully more of the former than the latter.

    3. I don’t see any problem with us having closer links to organisations or people who are close to the industry. I think that, so long as it is on our own terms, that will be a benefit.

Of all the debate on this type of issue I still vividly recall a couple of points Zorro made. One was a question about what stops TRF being just like any other part of the racing media (words to that effect at any rate) and a point about the proverbial free lunch and the placing of hands upon knees. I often think about those comments. Gamble also, in his unique way, keeps my mind alert to pitfalls.

I’m aware of those dangers and the danger that in growing the site in the wrong way we endanger the goose. That is a balance and a line we tread and something we (myself and my colleagues at TRF) must judge as best we can – with lots of help from your good selves of course!

I would LOVE to publish articles by any one of a score or more TRF’ers in the Features section should they want to write them and send them through to me (david@theracingforum.co.uk)

My use of the word "articles" was misleading; it wasn’t meant as a reference to the ‘Features’ screeds specifically, welcome though they are, but more just as an appreciative nod to the correspondents responsible for submitting interesting copy to the forum, of whom there are many. For ‘Big Zeb’ read ‘horse’ in general and wander over to ‘Big Race Discussions’ for some solid, opinionated discussion. For ‘AP McCoy’ read ‘jockeys, trainers, connections’ in general and return to the main board for some non-gushing and balanced appraisal

All submitted by those who seek no reward for work which is, in a not insignificant number of cases at least the equal of those who do request reward, or have an ulterior motive

As has been mentioned Richard Dunwoody pens columns elsewhere. If I want to read his spiel I can look there and can see no point in having him here too

Some complain that anonymous usernames are ‘cowardly’ and posters should write under their own name. I disagree as anonymity allows the reader to judge the writer solely on the strength of the prose submitted without being unduly influenced by knowing who he or she is. That is one of the key strengths of the all-enfranchising internet message board in my opinion

So a Richard Dunwoody column writ-large in bright lights has no place on here I feel, but should he wish to join in the daily dialogue behind a pseudonym he’d of course be welcomed.

    Howzabout ‘Dessie’ RD :)

For better or worse my dips into TRF have become a valued part of the daily routine which is why I get annoyed when something happens that spoils the experience.

Free speech from the cold fields beyond the cosy city limits is what TRF should strive to continue and where it should strive to remain

‘Names’ have no place out here

out here in the perimeter there are no

    stars

    Drone,

Wanting to hear what the man in the street thinks about racing is a worthy sentiment. But shouldn’t we treat everyone the same? No matter where they come from, no matter who they are?

I am equally interested to hear what a bookie, professional gambler, jockey, man from Halifax or Thailand – thinks of racing.

As long as Richard does not over-state his tipster connection, don’t see the problem.

You don’t even need to be over 20 to know who this guy is :D This is great news and i can’t wait to read his work. His win on Minnehoma in the ’94 National is still one of my all time favourites.

Drone – I do appreciate your concerns and sentiments,I’ve said before that I see the forum (message board) as fundamentally central to everything that TRF stands for. But I do think we can offer other content of interest to racing fans without necessarily damaging that aspect.

Hardly worth hanging oneself for, as RD will be ‘joining us’ in name only, and will add or subtract little to the actual discussion, which remains the beating heart of this forum.
Disappointing, nevertheless, that TRF sees it necessary to encourage the promotion of dubious tipsters as part of the path to its survival.

    I have few Heroes in this world that i aspire to,Robbie Williams,JJ Burnel,Hugh Cornwell,Steve Cauthen,John Francome and

    Richard Dunwoody

,Woody riding Cheltenham was a feast to my eyes.Remittance Man,Roadster,Very Promising,Another Coral, the list is endless! I use the word King sparingly but King Dandy and King Richard sits well with me! Unfortunately i have read up on Richards exploits as a Tipster and if the best he can offer to sell his wares is quote,-"Notable winners inc Admission 10/1, Space Telescope,8/1 and Changing Lanes 6/1" there"s hope for me yet! Not only are they not notable, they are not exactly quality horses and as for the prices!!!!! Those on here who love to slag me off will argue a winners a winner! Yeh they are but from someone with his wealth of knowledge and endless connections you would expect more! King Richard the Jockey cant be criticised. As a Tipster i"m afraid he"s Richard the turd! Corm,i am King of the Tipsters on here and my detailed analysis as to why i select the quality horses i do is legendary! Modesty prevents me from listing my notable winners! The day i need to pay for Tips is the day i need to pay for Sex! Dissapointing corporate decision i"m afraid! :(

An eloquent and revealing dissection of the ‘odds to…’ tipping wheeze RH

As old as the hills and for the purveyor a source of money for even older rope

I have no doubt though that Mr Dunwoody being the good egg he is does tip the same horse to each and every one of his subscribers…

…to do otherwise would be just too, too greedy

Bob Rothman…blimey  a blast of chill ill wind from the past

It’s a bit sad to see someone like Richard stooping to the depths of "odds-to" tipping services. IMHO it doesn’t add much to TRF to allow him a bit of banal drivel every month as a thinly-veiled promo for same. Sack’m Corm.

Yes. Mr Dunwoody has not hit the TRF pitch, rather revealing that (1) he’s not seen much of the Forum before; and (2) that he sees it as a free ad. spot, rather than for the debating chamber it is.

Only a minute or two adapting his material for TRF formatting, though, so what’s he got to lose? And the rest of us needn’t read his ads if we don’t want to.
