It does seem a bit disproportionate however the establishment aren’t going to forget someone sticking their middle finger up to them thousands of miles away for thirty years and then welcome them back with a rap on the knuckles. I get the impression Biggs thought he could come back and serve a while and be treated as a lovable old rogue who was a bit naughty forty years ago. Well, he’s found out different and I have to say personally he’s getting what he deserved. As for the other case you highlighted the sentences do seem lenient even after the extensions but I guess that is a problem with the current sentencing rules/guidelines that the UK adhere to. In particular the one who used the caustic soda certainly wouldn’t get out at all if it were up to me as I have trouble comprehending how anyone can consider doing such a thing. Maybe a good idea would be to dip his weapon of choice in a nice caustic soda bath as the first part of his punishment. The other two are little better and should certainly be behind bars for longer than the period they will probably serve.
July 3, 2009 at 13:35 #237559It occured to me that the public purse will pay for Ronnie Biggs whether he’s kept in prison or not. If he’s in prison it comes out of the Prison Service budget, if he is released his care costs would come out of the NHS budget. In fact presumably his current health care is administered courtesy the NHS anyway.

July 3, 2009 at 14:10 #237570So what you’re saying, Rob, is that Mr Biggs’ 30-year jaunt to Brazil to live it up on Copacabana Beach and shag Latina lovelies was all a selfless act to save the dear old taxpayer back in Blighty some dough?
July 3, 2009 at 18:52 #237648It’s a fair point ..
July 3, 2009 at 20:43 #237662I assume he only came back here because he realised that, with old age and failing health he would have a better standard of care in this country than in Brazil. If so, that is what he is getting. But in prison.
July 4, 2009 at 03:39 #237737I can think of more worthwhile people to feel sorry for than Ronnie Biggs in this imperfect world of ours.
August 12, 2009 at 06:41 #243463Free at last, but with what seemed just a matter of days before Ron was due to meet the big fella, he’s gone and had a second wind!

Can’t beat the tonic of good news eh?!
August 13, 2009 at 19:09 #243707I doubt it will be long before he is skipping down Margate high street from pub to pub, maybe having a good old booze up with another ex-lag released early for recovering from an incurable illness, Ernest Saunders.
Once the precedent is set you can’t blame people for taking the piss out of the establishment.
August 13, 2009 at 19:54 #243713To be fair, he’s still quite buggered, but can stand, walk and raise a glass to lips. That’ll do
