Forced changes due to compulsory purchase of part of Wetherby racecourse for the A1 expansion have been completed and the altered course will officially open this Wednesday.
October 12, 2007 at 15:35 #119205A further article in the Post reveals that the revised distance of a lap of the track (1m4f from 1m4.5f), and the (re-)positioning of fences thereon, opens up the possibilites of both 3m4f and 4m chases being run at Wetherby in due course.
As a fan of the slow, mudloving plodder, the idea of a West Yorkshire National over the latter distance early in the year (maybe complementing the Eider, with bonuses available for winning or placing in both) probably still exists nowhere else other than in the darkest recesses of my brain; but be honest, how fantastic a test would that be!

October 12, 2007 at 22:15 #119275With the track being so far away from a station, why do they not provide a shuttle bus service though? At least for Charlie Hall day anyway.
I fancy making the trip to see Denman et al but that is putting me off….
October 12, 2007 at 22:55 #119280I’m told that the ground at Wetherby is unseasonably firm and thet they’re badly in need of rain.
October 13, 2007 at 22:06 #119372Ooh dear, yes, a dry surface at Wetherby in October can be very dry indeed.
This corresponding fixture in 2003 was run on going officially described as firm and might even have been a touch harder than that. Extra hurdles races were laid on after the chases, including the well-established Bobby Renton Chase, were abandoned well in advance; and ultimately just 29 horses turned out for the six contests. They did include Gimmick, Rigmarole and Ei Ei in a 0-140 Class B handicap, though, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

October 14, 2007 at 10:17 #119404Well its being raining in Doncaster for the last few hours (not predicted any BBC weathermen who may stumble this way) as Wetherby aint that far away I assume the ground will not stay firm for long
