    Hello,

I’m trying to find a descendent from Red Rum….does anybody have one for sale or know where I can find such a horse. Also looking for other famous bloodlines…please get in contact with me julia.armstrong@fevermedia.co.uk

I suspect most TRF members will presume this is a spoof, but the company Fever Media does exist, and given the type of TV programs they boast of producing, I suspect this is for real.

So Julia, sorry to be the one to break the bad news, but there are no descendants of Red Rum, for the very simple reason that he was deprived of his wedding tackle (in common with almost all horses that run over fences or hurdles) long before he became a Grand National legend.

And for future reference, it’s spelt ‘Stallion’.

Or in the case of Red Rum , ‘Gelding’.

Out of interest did Red Rum’s dam, Mared produce anything else and if so were they bred from?

If Red Rum did have full/half siblings it’s possible he could be the great, great, great…uncle of some horse kicking about now

    Drone,

Mared produced plenty of winners apart from Red Rum, and I believe that one of her colts went on to be the sire of Rheingold, the 1972 Derby runner-up.

I don’t rememeber Rheingold as having a great career as a sire, but it’s a long time ago and he may well have been sold abroad?

My Ivor Herbert book has a photo of Mared, beneath which it says ‘Mared, Red Rum’s dam

, the once’ mad crazy race mare’, now many foals after Red Rum and in different ownership. So Rummy probably does have a few second cousins three times removed floating about somewhere. [he had two older half sisters, Neared and Quintula; the latter went to Germany..]

My memory was faulty – the relationship is rather more tenuous. Here’s the info from Red Rum’s entry in Timeform Chasers and Hurdlers 1975/6, the first ever edition.

Mared, by the sprinter Magic Red,… is out of a half sister to Spring Offensive, who is the dam of many winners including Faberge II, sire of Rheingold.

So Red Rum and Rheingold had the same great grand-dam, a 1934 mare called Batika.

Rheingold went to stud in ireland from 1974-79 then to Japan until his death in 1990.

He sired Gold Cup winner Gildoran.

    All according to Wikipedia.

    Tuffers,

The name that sprang to mind was Alderbrook, who has been pretty successful as a NH sire, but of course he only ran over hurdles.

Still pretty rare to have a Champion Hurdle winner going to stud.

Fortina the 1947 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner sired many good winners including Fort Leney.
Manicou who I think won the King George Chase was also a successful sire of jumpers.

I’m fairly sure there are a couple of "entires" currently racing over fences, maybe only hurdles.

I’m sure I’ve seen "horse" a few times on the racecards last winter. Don’t think they’ve made much impression though, minds on other things………..

Regarding currently active stallions, Midnight Legend was a pretty good hurdler, but like Alderbrook, i don’t think he ran over fences.

Roselier won the French equivalent of the Champion, the Grande Course De Haies.

Hobbs’ Safari Journey is still listed as an entire; got a listed chase win to his name too!

Dom Alco – sire of Neptune Collonges – was a decent hurdler in France. May have run over fences (they are seemingly more willing to try them over in France)but don’t have his full record to hand.

    Not enough for my liking.

The staying chaser triumvirate of Cannon Fire, Matt The Thrasher and Green Finger were all very late in being deprived of their biscuits (all had already won chases before gelding, so their entire status hadn’t proven a bar to jumping birch up to that point).

Given they were all trained in south and / or west Wales for the rump of their careers, I cannot imagine there would have been no interest in them as potential sires of Point-to-Point animals in what is, of course, a hugely active part of the world for that mode of racing.

An opportunity lost. Three of them, in fact.
