Few things annoy me more than the race reader neglecting to add the ‘dead’ word to the race comments, when a horse has obviously paid the ultimate penalty. Truly lazy journalism.
Not always the journo’s fault – depends on the policy of his employer – e.g. sportinglife.com as a policy (absolutely wrongly imo) do not mention fatalities in their "comments in running".
February 8, 2010 at 19:06 #274976I was surprised to see Striking Article back on the course as he’d pulled up very feelingly after winning his previous start at Wetherby a few months back.
An extremely pertinent point that surprisingly few have picked up on so far. The horse could barely put one leg in front of the other at Wetherby after the line and then 4 months on, he is an easy-to-back 11/8 chance in a race which on form he had upwards of 20 lbs in hand and duly pulls up as if amiss. This incident doesn’t strike me as one of those unfortunate unforseen accidents that can’t be avoided like the fate which befell Red Moloney.
February 9, 2010 at 15:35 #275151You’d always wonder in these cases as to my knowledge horse insurance only pays out if a horse is put down or dies on the racetrack- just coincidence?
February 9, 2010 at 16:06 #275160Your knowledge of horse insurance could be flawed then Carv. Admittedly I have been out of the game for a few years but it always used to be all risks of mortality, be it accident, sickness or disease.
Howard Johnson is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of equine underwriters up and down the land!

Reporting ‘dead’ when they’re not is worse!
February 16, 2010 at 12:07 #277100just read via alan lee in the times that phillip hobbs,s rock celtic sadly had to be put down after falling at the 2nd last in the 4.40 at exeter on sunday.
i looked through the results and comments in running on racing post, attheraces and the sporting life sites but there was no mention that this poor horse had died so i was hoping that somehow he had survived. - AuthorPosts
