Ah yes, I wondered how long it would be before the old “colonial” word was brought out by the Brit to beat the British. I expect you get the flogger out every night to beat yourself with. Everything we did is wrong and everything everyone else does that’s wrong is because of the British.
Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2024 at 16:52 #1701265Are you going to say that the British did not commit gang rape, burn people, and other atrocities?
I am not afraid to admit that we (the British) used to behave reprehensibly. It appears that you are.
July 8, 2024 at 16:59 #1701266The two important words in your last post Glad are “used to”.
We used to treat women as second class citizens and used to treat gays even worse; but we are living in a different age now.
Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2024 at 17:10 #1701267Right. Because nobody rapes women or abuses gays these days.
Nobody is condoning these criminal acts. But to pretend that only immigrants are responsible is utter nonsense.
July 8, 2024 at 17:49 #1701270The vast, vast majority of people, British or otherwise are law abiding and just want to lead an honest life. A small minority of people will commit crimes of varying severity, it’s a fact of life. Perhaps effective policing is the answer, I wonder what’s happened to their numbers recently.
July 8, 2024 at 17:52 #1701272An honourable exception was Ann Cryer, a brave woman who was then subjected to a campaign of vile abuse after she tried to draw attention to what was going on
Sarah Champion too, the MP for Rotherham, a town infamous for the cover-up of a sexual abuse scandal
In October 2016, she was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities.[2] In August 2017, Champion resigned from her post following criticism of an opinion piece she wrote for The Sun that discussed what she termed the problem of white girls being raped and exploited by British Pakistani men (Wikipedia)
Not sure your point about the Home Counties is valid as Oxford also saw a scandal with several men eventually jailed
The problem is real and I don’t think drawing comparisons with what went on in the Empire way back whenever is helpful. Humans from all civilizations throughout history have committed dreadful abuses upon fellow humans
I’ve no idea if Germany has a similar problem with certain ethnic groups committing heinous crimes in excess of the pro rata average for the country as a whole but if it has it would serve no purpose to turn a blind eye to it by rationalising it away saying ‘just look what the Nazis did’
That was then, this is now. Some cultures have progressed, some haven’t it seems
July 8, 2024 at 17:59 #1701273“But to pretend that only immigrants are responsible is utter nonsense.”
Perhaps you could provide examples of where:
There has been the equivalent amount of abuse committed by non-Muslim grooming gangs
An example of where a teacher and his family has been intimidated into hiding by “native Brits”
An autistic child has had death threats issued against him after dropping a Bible.
July 8, 2024 at 18:18 #1701274“The problem is real and I don’t think drawing comparisons with what went on in the Empire way back whenever is helpful”.
Completely agree. Whataboutery at its worst.
“I’ve no idea if Germany has a similar problem with certain ethnic groups committing heinous crimes”.
This case was in the headlines recently, where a young woman who described the attackers on social media as “pigs” served more time in prison than the rapists. People are rightly angered by this sort of thing, whether the high minded crowd like it or not.
The attack happened not long after the mass attacks on women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve 2016. Committed by men from North Africa and the Middle East.
To head off the inevitable criticism, no one is saying that sexual assaults are only carried out by Asian men. But there is no getting away from the fact that quite a large proportion of Muslim men do not share enlightened western ideas about women and female equality. Burying our heads in the sand because we are all so good and liberal will not make the issue go away.
The liberal utopia a lot of people think they are building could be a house built on sand. A few of the results in last week’s General Election ought to serve as a warning.
July 8, 2024 at 18:36 #1701277A liberal utopia will never exist because of the misinformed and hysterical RWNJ element.
Funny that stories such as this are conveniently forgotten:
July 8, 2024 at 20:17 #1701285They are not forgotten.
But I think you are missing the point that within the Western world there is a universally accepted belief in female equality, as a result of years of intellectual, social and cultural change. Whereas that is not the case in other cultures and religions.
The idea you can import millions of people from these cultures with entirely different values and beliefs without any requirement to integrate and there will not be any consequences is a utopian pipedream. And demographic trends show this population is increasing in size, while the birth rate amongst European people has fallen off a cliff.
July 8, 2024 at 20:24 #1701287Back on topic:
Sunak has named his Shadow Cabinet. Former Foreign Secretary David Cameron obviously thinks that sort of thing is beneath him and has quit. But he still gets to keep the peerage created for him to become Foreign Secretary and his daily allowance for attending the House Of Lords. Nice of him.
Sunak also made his Chief Of Staff Liam Booth a life peer in his dissolution honours, despite him presiding over one of the worst campaigns in living memory. Shameless does not even begin to describe it.
July 24, 2024 at 08:41 #1702533“Taken..9/1 against James Cleverley to be the next leader of the Conservative Party.”
Confirmed he is standing. Into 6/1 and shorter now.
You know it makes sense, Conservative MPs and members.
July 24, 2024 at 08:44 #1702534Pity that it’ll never happen.
He’s one of the thickest politicians I have ever seen, and that’s saying something.
July 24, 2024 at 14:48 #1702562Could we have an atheist as a Prime Minister and a leader of the opposition at the same time?
Value Is EverythingJuly 24, 2024 at 14:49 #1702563I don’t believe so.
July 24, 2024 at 14:59 #1702564At least Cleverley is more towards the centre.
I’d prefer Tom Tug, but Cleverley would be acceptable.Value Is Everything -
