Interesting turn of events that this outstanding filly might go to America along with stablemate Raven’s Pass.
A few questions are raised:
Would she be better off going for the turf or dirt race for juvenile fillies?
If the answer to the above is dirt, what encouragement does her pedigree offer that the surface will be suitable?
Will connections be putting the filly’s three-year-old season at risk by running her in the States?
I personally hope she runs in one of them, and wins it.
September 29, 2008 at 16:49 #182696It suggests to me that the trainer thinks she may well not train on at 3yo.
September 29, 2008 at 16:52 #182697Or that the trainer thinks that the right-handed track at Santa Anita won’t suit her!

I certainly dont think that she is as open to improvement as many of her peers should be. I think her run in america would probably be the best option as it will mark her out as a very exceptional filly worldwide without her even having to make it to 3yo.
September 29, 2008 at 18:23 #1827199-10f US winner, very good sire on turf/dirt, has top-class 2yos, progeny usually progress well
RP summary of the sire for what its worth
She isnt big thats for sure. Quite powerful. Real contrast with Cityscape (in previous race of course) in the paddock, who has a lot of filling out to do
On the other hand, Luca is certain his horse is top class. Not exactly one to get that wrong is he? So Rainbow might not have to improve that much to stay ahead of pack
September 29, 2008 at 19:15 #182722It not that fact that she is small, she is like built like a bull, very similair to johanasburgh and horses who are built like that dont really make much improvement from 2-3
September 29, 2008 at 19:23 #182723Could going for the dirt race be more to do with the fact the mile on turf at Santa Anita is a tight two bend affair and with usually a large number of runners it will most likely be a very rough race?
All it then needs is a bad draw to be totally shafted and to have a wasted journey.
September 29, 2008 at 19:35 #182725I thought it had been established on the "Has John Gosden ever been to Santa Anita" thread that the turf course would be better (for a mile at least) than the dirt, as the horses have further to run before the first bend?
Her breeding seems to suggest that dirt will be fine, and she’s proven on turf, so I would look to support her whichever race she went for.
For what it’s worth, I can’t see anything at this stage that would make me think she wouldn’t train on, and given the fact that she looks head and shoulders above anything else we’ve seen, she could well improve less than her peers and still take the Guineas.
September 29, 2008 at 22:23 #182744She is a fairly "made" 2-y-o and is unlikely to make normal progress over the winter.
Having said that, the others have certainly got some catching up to do!

Depends if they draw the line at the Juvenile Fillies. The pro-ride surface isn’t favouring either dirt or turf at the moment which is a good sign. California’s not like Belmont there are 2yo fillies races post-BC – most notably November/Decembers Starlet at Hollywood Park which would still give her 2 or 3 months before they need to prepare for the Guineas.
September 30, 2008 at 00:22 #182764Remember that the Juvenile Fillies (Pro-Ride) is run over 8 1/2 furlongs and has 14 runners. The Juvenile Fillies Turf is run over 8 furlongs and will only have a maximum of 12 runners.
The Pro-ride is worth US$ 2 Million whilst the turf race is US$ 1 Million so lots to consider.
September 30, 2008 at 00:22 #182765Am i the only one who doesn’t buy the fact small top class 2yo do not train on?
Mill Reef was no giant 2yo, for me its a total myth.
September 30, 2008 at 00:24 #182767Rainbow View gets an automatic spot in the Juvenile Fillies Turf as a winner of a "Challenge" race ie. a win and your in event in the Fillies Mile.
September 30, 2008 at 01:02 #182772Engine and temperament are far more important than size for me, and she has both in the bank already. I’d sooner know what qualities are present now rather than hope they develope over the winter months.

Is it not conceivable that people are reading far too much into what is, at this stage, an ambitious possibility, seeking (as racing folk are known to do) to over-complicate a fairly simple matter?
There is nothing in Rainbow View’s pedigree that says she won’t train on, Dynaformer having already sired the likes of Parole Board, Lucarno and Michita, and nothing she has done thus far could be considered indicative of a potentially lean three-year-old campaign. Her physique offers another angle, of that there can be no doubt, but with breeding on her side can any of us really predict how such a horse will mature? If memory serves Russian Rhythm wasn’t exactly a diminutive juvenile, nor were Six Perfections, Soviet Song, Attraction or even the likes of Airwave.
I would think it far more likely that John Gosden knows Rainbow View will need further than a mile next year and is achieving all that he can with what is a top class, eight-furlong juvenile filly. Besides, with the likes of Fantasia and Serious Attitude (the most exciting horse of the season for me, an Mtoto filly out of a well related daughter of Cape Cross, winning impressively over six furlongs) likely to improve a good deal, Rainbow View might not have the easiest season anyway and making the most of her juvenile year makes perfect sense.
Still, only time will tell I suppose.
September 30, 2008 at 04:41 #182810You missed Dynaformer’s best performer out there

That said this is all irrelevant as Rainbow View doesn’t stand a chance in the Juvenile Fillies.

I missed Barbaro out simply because his only run as a two-year-old came so close to his first as a three-year-old (two were six weeks apart).
