‘But is it really racist to ask where someone is from?’

    No, as I said earlier.

Or even where they are ‘really’ from?’

    Yes, certainly in this case.

‘I can’t help but feel that Fulani wasted an opportunity to show a little bit of patience.’

Again, saying it’s up to her to diffuse a situation she didn’t cause.

I have addressed his point about age already.

As I said before, she no doubt gets this a lot and I’m sure she and many others in her situation soon work out the difference between genuine curiosity and racism. We’ve read a transcript which is fairly damning. We’ll never know how she said it (tone can be important) but I’m not convinced it would help Hussey’s cause.

I do actually see both sides of this argument.

As it’s the World Cup, I’d liken it to the penalty Michael Owen once won for England which David Beckham duly scored from.

There was contact from the Argentina defender, for sure Owen made a lot of it, but contact is contact and Owen was entitled to go to ground.

If you don’t make contact, the player gets booked for diving, but if there is contact it’s a penalty.

There was contact here – this was a penalty.

A penalty but not a red card. The resignation came very swiftly and before that much comment had been passed either way. My views on this incident are clear but I would not have been calling for her head if it had not already happened. This could have been dealt with without the need for a resignation I think. Unless of course there is more to it that we don’t know about, maybe there is, maybe there isn’t.

“This could have been dealt with without the need for a resignation I think.”

Yes, why couldn’t Lady Hussey be allowed to just say sorry, if the incident has been reported accurately. Why does someone have to be punished?

It seems to me that she has been thrown under the bus by people who have known her all her life and are supposed to be her friends. Are we not allowed to hear her side of the story?

How would anyone feel if they were accused of something in work on the basis of one person’s word and were then dismissed without any sort of hearing or appeal?

To everyone promoting this culture of microaggressions and the policing of every little word: be careful what you wish for. One day you may fall foul of it and find no one is prepared to defend you. History shows how plenty of people full of revolutionary zeal eventually ended up under the guillotine and in the gulag.

An apology should have been sufficient. After all, David Baddiel recently apologised 25 years after appearing in blackface. I am not aware of the people piling into an 83 year old woman calling for him to be cancelled.

Not so much a red card as a player who’d conceded a penalty asking to be substituted?

If she’d stayed on the pitch she might have equalised with a politically-correct header from a corner in stoppage time – we’ll never know for sure!

This being the Royal Family, the ‘resignation’ may of course been anything but. I don’t believe that it was the result of any pile on because it came too quickly.

She may have been thrown under the bus, there may be more to this incident that we don’t know, they may know of other things that she’s done that do warrant a resignation. It could be all or none of these. Maybe she simply felt it was a resigning matter.

This alone does not warrant resignation/dismissal and does not make her racist. However, you have to wonder whether white people get the same inquisition about their background and heritage.

Having read the transcript of the conversation – a version no one seems to be disputing – it’s not great tbh.

That is the issue here, there does appear to be quite an insistence that she is either fully or partly ‘not British’ which seems to be down to the fact that she’s black. There’s too much of it to dismiss it as a slip of the tongue. This may be isolated, it may not be. Did Lizzie von Windsor and Phil the Greek get this sort of questioning?

I wonder how long it’ll be before Snooker gets it … that the game ends with the white ball hitting the black one into a pocket as the final act.

Nigel Farage sticking his head above the parapet again?

Those of a certain age (ie most of us) will remember the old BBC programme Rentaghost. Farage should have his own remake: Rentac**t.

I don’t understand why, if she felt so violated, she went straight to the press. Some things about this don’t add up. I wish the way that the police treat ethnic? (I don’t even know what words to use to describe anyone any more more) people garnere as much publicity because there is genuine racism there imo.

Must admit that the media has grabbed hold of this with both hands. I’m beginning to wonder if this has been a put up job.

I have not seen a transcript, was it recorded, or just hearsay from onlookers?
