The 2yo races at Newbury over the weekend were full of interest and bluebloods just crying out to be seen in the paddock and going to post but not a sign of them on RUK.

There was ample time both days to have in depth coverage of the first 2 two year old races both days but all we got was a glimpse of one horse, UAE King going to the start.

Quite often RUK have pictures with no horses, whether it be presenter and pundit talking in front of the camera or Dave Nevison and bookmakers rep spouting their rubbish. Nev came up with this gem yesterday – “Wholestone has drifted from 15/8 to 9/4 so the betting tells you he wont be winning today”.

Watch racing in other countries like Australia, America, France and they make a point of showing the horses in the preliminaries but not here and on a subscription based specialist racing channel, it’s puzzling. If I was producing the coverage why would I not be keen for viewers to see the horses prior to such interesting races when I had ample time?

I don’t often have a good word for RUK but they did do a reasonable job at Newmarket during the week. The success or otherwise does also depend to an extent on the paddock judge. They overdosed a little with both Morrison and Mellish. Personally, I would take Morrison over Mellish any day of the week.

You’ve answered your own question earlier in the post. RUK exists as a vehicle for the bookies; why would they want knowledgeable viewers to see anything which may be advantageous to them?
